The Final Deadline Looms - Pilots Coming Today

Submitted by izzi on December 13, 2007 - 12:04pm. ::

Hi folks,

Remember Al, Glynn and Rebecca? They won this little contest back in September. Well, today is the day they deliver their final TQ challenge - the full length pilots for the shows they want to host.

As I type, I'm listening to Rebecca's program and it's quite great. We'll have her show, and work from Glynn and Al up on Friday night for your weekend listening pleasure.

There's no voting this time around, but your comments are welcomed and encouraged.

While you're listening to the future of public radio, don't forget to rate public radio present. The networks are listening:

Two Job Opportunities

Submitted by izzi on November 20, 2007 - 11:46am. ::

Hi folks,

Here are two really interesting job opportunities for people interested in developing programs.

The "History Hotline" is being developed for regional distribution initially, with interest in future national expansion. The team is enthusiastic, open to feedback, and committed to making great radio. They are also grown-ups.

Check it out and thanks - Izzi

VFH Radio at the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities is seeking a creative Producer for "The History Hotline" radio program. With the support of an Associate Producer and Research Assistant, the Producer will have primary responsibility for developing a weekly, one-hour, local/regional “call-out” show with national potential. The Producer will plan, research, coordinate, direct, and record listener calls and feature production sessions with the Hotline hosts and will edit, create, and distribute broadcast-ready programs. VFH seeks a radio professional with significant production experience, preferably with a background in American history. Applications must be submitted electronically at the Jobs@UVa website which can be accessed on the web at: https://jobs.virginia.edu. The posting number for this position is 0601226. The position is listed as open until filled. The University of Virginia is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer.

Your Turn - Rate Your Public Radio Faves

Throughout the Talent Quest you've been reviewing work by people new to public radio. Now we're switching things up.

What do you think of the programs already on the air and some new ideas from the networks?

For the next several weeks, the big three networks -- NPR, PRI, and American Public Media -- are offering some of their programs for your review and comment. Check it out:

http://www.publicradioquest.com/node/2679

What elements of the programs do you like, what could be better, and who's really hosty?

Be constructive: the networks are listening. In December, your comments will be shared with the programming chiefs at all three networks.

More TQ on YouTube - Muckety Mucks Speak

Submitted by izzi on November 7, 2007 - 4:15pm. ::

Ok, I have no idea if that's the way you spell muckety muck.

New Quest video went up on YouTube today. This one features interviews with public radio movers and shakers about the Quest, the winners, and the role talent plays in the future of public radio.

The interviews were recorded in September just after we announced Glynn, Al, and Rebecca as winners.

Enjoy.

Weigh in - Manifesto on Talent + Program Development

Submitted by izzi on October 29, 2007 - 11:38am. ::

Every industry has its list of people thought of as defining what we do. In film, it's people like Scorsese, Orson Wells and Spike Lee. In public radio, we have Jim Russell.

Jim helped to define the sound of public radio as one of the first employees at NPR. He redefined it at Marketplace, the business show with rules like "no data without context," and "the world through the lens of business."

Jim has shared his maifesto for program and talent development at Transom.org (which is run by TQ judge Jay Allison). Have a look, and let us know where Jim nails it, and where he's off the mark:

Talent Quest Mentors Announced - A lot of help from Friends

Submitted by izzi on October 10, 2007 - 7:03am. ::

Glynn, Al, and Rebecca are hard at work on their pilot programs, but they won't be doing it alone. We've paired each of them with an experienced radio pro - their own set of golden ears - to help them shape and develop their shows.

We're very pleased to introduce our three Public Radio Talent Quest Mentors:

Working with Glynn - Ben Manilla has grown a variety of companies specializing in production, distribution and consulting. Established in 1991, Ben Manilla Productions, Inc. (www.bmpaudio.com) is an award winning, digital production facility located in the Mission District of San Francisco.

Winners Announced Tonight!

"Hello X, It's Jake from the Talent Quest and you're going to Minneapolis!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Screaming ensues.

That gives you (a very distilled) sense of the "prize patrol" calls we made on Monday. The three winners of the Quest will be introduced to public radio and to you tonight, in a special ceremony in St. Paul.

We'll update the homepage with an anouncement at around 8pm ET tonight.

Check back. You may be surprised.

It all comes down to you, today

This has been a very intense week for the final 5 Questers and the Talent Quest team. Emotion is running high as tonight's deadline approaches and we get ready to announce the 3 winners on Wednesday night.

Today is the last hill on the rollercoaster - it's a big one, with twists, and dips, and a full view of the park below.

If you've been lurking on this site, today is the day to get on the ride.

For 9 months we've been asking the country who you want to hear on the radio. Before 11:59pm ET tonight, we hope you'll vote and leave comments on what you hear.

Thanks for being part of the ride. Everyone on the team is a little dizzy, but we all have big grins on our faces.

A Twist at the End - Past Contestants Judge Final Round

Submitted by izzi on September 21, 2007 - 11:16am. ::

As we designed the Quest, we wanted to find ways to bring interesting twists into the competition. Some of the best ideas came from TV reality shows.

In this final round of voting, we brought past contestants "back to the island" to help us pick the final 3 winners.

Earlier this week, Bee Jellyfish, Carrie Kaufman, Chuck Mertz, and Komal Trivedi met by conference call to vote on their top three entries. Their votes were combined with the votes of the main judges when we met earlier this week.

Like all of our judging calls, the conversation was intense, and it was hard to narrow the field. All four of our past contestants made great comments and gave the judges lots to think about. Huge thanks to them for their time, their ears, and their gracious support of the final Questers.

Thanks for checking out the Talent Quest. As you heard on the program, we're looking for the next great public radio hosts, and you play a big part in the search.

On the homepage, you'll find pictures of our five finalists. Each one has made it through earlier rounds of the Quest and on Monday, we'll open voting for the final elimination.

This is your chance to vote for who you want to hear on the radio. Your vote and the votes of other listeners will decide one of the three winners.

The 3 winners will each go on to develop their program idea into pilots for new, national radio programs.
