Behind the Black Mask: Mystery Writers Revealed

Submitted by S Clute on May 11, 2007 - 12:07am. ::

This clip introduces an episode of my podcast "Behind the Black Mask," an interview show where mystery writers share secrets about their fiction and the writing life. Given the variety and popularity of mystery fiction, these interviews provide a cross section of our reasons for writing and reading

The voice draws me to this entry repeatedly. As I said in my previous comment, compelling.

This is what public radio *should* be all about: accessible, intellectual, and engaging content combined with Clute's irresistably sexy voice! A+!

This show would snag my ear if it were expanded to include all literature. I am not a huge mystery fan (though my Mom and Sister are), but maybe I just haven't given the genre enough of a chance. Regardless, you have a really nice presence, voice and delivery. I am an avid reader, and I would love to hear more about good books on the radio.

Nice work!

Shannon's voice is strong and poignant. His commentary is colorful and intriguing. I enjoyed every second. I hope to hear him on NPR soon.

Louis

What a fabulous radio voice! This is the best of all the talks I've heard.

Kept me riveted all the way to the end! I really liked this entry!
I remember when I was younger I was obSESSed with mystery novels and had no one to talk to about it. This sort of thing would've been a JOY!
Too bad the thing cuts off right as the interview is beginning :(
Great idea for a show though, and definitely stands out!
Good luck!

Un timbre de voix bien en relation avec le sujet, le ton adéquat, la touche d'humour et un sens professionnel bien ressenti par le public ! Congratulations.

You have a great voice, but from the intro, I expected a short interview of a novelist. Did I miss it?

Submitted by S Clute on May 15, 2007 - 11:02pm.

What you heard in the clip is the formal introduction to an episode; it ends at the moment the guest joins in. I always kick off with a close reading of a single text, to encourage substantial dialogue about that text. What I try to avoid is generalized discussion about the author's career or the practice of writing. Thanks for listening, and I appreciate the feedback about my voice. I hope others will have the chance to hear it!

This is by no means a "close reading" of the text. It's a bloated, nonspecific book review by someone who seems to like the sound of his own voice more than he cares for the interest or comprehension of his listeners. Not to be blunt, but I am confused as well. You talk about the author and her work, and it sounds unique, but then you diverge into an oddly glowing book review with absolutely no context that could pretty much apply to any number of works. Use actual detail -- I got no sense of the story.

I enjoy AM radio if the on-air talent graps my attention. Listening to Shannon Clute makes the topic intresting, an eye-opener and very detailed which only makes me want to hear more of him. He really gets the point across in a unique way-He's got a certain style in the way he expresses each word he uses which is pretty incredible. Would love to hear more of Shannon Clute!

I've been listening to this podcast since its inception. Mr Clute puts his listeners at ease, then stretches them with his questions. They generally thank him for asking them or chuckle at a new way of thinking about their own work.
Mr. Clute has a way of eliciting author's comments which will help any writer, not just mystery writers. Easy to listen to and thought provoking.

Long-time listener of Behind The Black Mask, and I can't fault the line-up of guests Shannon Clute and Richard Edwards have managed to assemble. Not only that, but the interviews are incisive, entertaining, and downright eye-opening to your average mystery fan. I can't recommend 'em enough.
