Sam on Kissing: from Gere and Ahmadinajad to the Romans to apes
This is an excerpt from a show where I monologued about Gere and Ahmadinejad getting in trouble for kissing women in public, types of kissing from Roman times to now, and who, other than humans, kiss.

I love those. My husband and I also give each other the raspberries from time to time when we want to make a statement.
Fun topic with terrific delivery. What a voice!

The PRTQ crowd has more than two minutes worth to say about this topic, that's for sure!
Thanks for listening and taking the time to comment.

It's easier when you're inside.
Nice monologue. Your delivery was comfortable and interesting. How did you keep all those facts straight? That shows some grace under pressure.
Theresa
Theresa,
Being from MN, I can't say that I've kissed at 40 below, but I've come darn close!
I was in Anchorage about a year ago. In the gift shop at the hospital, we discovered that of the five women in the shop, four were from MN and one was from Canada. How did someone from PA get to Fairbanks? That's a story I would love to hear!
Thanks for listening and commenting - given your background in radio, it's an honor (and I love your voice).

Samantha,
You've hosted only five shows and this clip is from the first one? Wow, you really are a natural.
I agree 100% with your list of attributes for the entries you're drawn to. Unfortunately lots of people are squandering two minutes of precious audio to present their resumes or to discuss other aspects of themselves (not that my entry is any example of what works, but I can still be a critic, right?). Thank you for finding an interesting and universal topic to draw us all in, and for making it interesting.
I listen to commercial radio almost as much as public, and think both worlds have something to learn from each other. I've also worked in both and learned that, unfortunately, the respective camps have little, if any, mutual respect. But maybe that's changing. One can only hope.
Best of luck to you.
Mary
Dear Mary,
Thanks for your thoughtful comments about what we're drawn to. I think a clarification is in order about my own experience - the clip is from the 4th of my own show which is the first one that I 'monologued.' The first three shows were guest interviews (they were all such interesting people they made me look great!) Prior to that I was a weekly guest on a commercial station for about 18 shows.
Re commercial vs public - they both have their attractions and their discontents. I sure learned a lot being on the commercial station - about myself, about America, about conservatives. Fabulous opportunity and great adventure.
Given your background in radio and revealed mic-envy, I really appreciate your comment and wish you all the best of luck!

The topic is certainly a good one, but I think it's more the host than anything. Hell, I've got two minutes; think I'll listen again.

schup, you're the greatest. but then, kissing and bacon... well, they just go together, don't they? naughty and nice at the same time?

Really, really liked your submission and could readily imagine you advancing in the PRTQ, and would understand why - you're a host. It's there; you've got it. Since you're responding here (which I really like that you and others do) I'm curious - do you consider your smooth, practiced delivery part of your appeal? Or a concern? I truly don't judge it either way; please understand I'm being quite respectful when I ask. I was just struck by one person's comment that your sound is "sooo radio" and have to admit ... yeah, I agree. I wonder if you think an ease and polish behind the mic is an asset in the PRTQ or a (mild) liability? I suppose I'm asking you to guess the minds of the judges and that may not be fair. Either way, thank you again and best of luck - patrick
Patrick,
First, I am flattered that you characterize my entry as 'smooth and practiced' because I have only hosted five shows on my own and the clip was taken from the first show where I monologued for an hour - I find it much easier to interview guests, but am practicing ad libbing. So, woohoo.
Is the style an asset or libability?
Well, this is what I said elsewhere on this site:
"The entries I find I am drawn to tend to have the following characteristics:
1) not self-referential
2) great voice - but not the typical NPR voice of soothing, modulated tones with virtually no dynamics
3) topic that is something other than how to be self-actualized - a new view of the world, something of substance
4) sense of humor - gotta be funny with actual laughter, preferably a belly laugh - some indication that the speakers are actually enjoying themselves
6) irreverence bordering on actual naughtiness; irony"

Does my audio live up to the above? I guess I'm interested in my topic, but it's a little odd to listen to one's self. I think it's for others to say. All I know is that I find it a complete hoot to do it and wonder if this much fun can possibly be legal.
Incidently, I did listen to your clip, and you also have a smooth, practiced delivery which I enjoyed very much. And, it's always nice to encounter another upper-midwesterner. Good luck and thanks for taking the time to comment.

Samantha,
I just want to say that I could not agree with you more about the entries one is drawn to. Also would like to thank you for posting such a thoughtful, complete, and articulate response.

I like how at ease you are. The delivery is effortless, and your voice is simply wonderful. Thanks for a job well done.

I thoroughly enjoyed your two minutes. Great voice too--reminds me of Dr. Laura. You're a natural...good luck.
I really like your voice and your piece kept my interest. Pacing is important and you nailed that. You get my vote. Best of luck!
BTW, I am a southern girl (North Carolina) and most of us start kissing our cousins as babies, when its cute, then stop when we become teens because that would be a sin! :)

Reminds me of my trip to Ireland; I didn't know about the double-cheek kiss, so when one of our hosts (quite the cutie) came at me with a pucker my face went the wrong way and we did a quick smooch. Very embarrassing.
Thanks for the clip and the link to your site.

Judge my hostiness in the PRTQ
I like your voice a lot....very nice. I just have to say, I hate the "air kiss", I find it extremely creepy when someone tries to plant or I guess not plant one of those on me. It's just really weird. Anyway great clip, I'll try and go listen to the show. Good luck!

Toney,
Thanks for listening - and coming out of the closet on the air kiss. I assume that you, like me, have no problem with the other kinds of kissing!

is sooo radio! Your topic was intriguing, too. You've got hostiness down, girl. I'm going over to listen to your entire show, curious to hear if you explored kissing in the south across the Mason Dixon. I'm assuming they have an abundance of practical and theoritical material to unwrap the origins of kissing cousins:) lol
Welcome to the quest! Great job. All best to you.
Lakeisha, I did not explore the topic of kissing south of the Mason Dixon line, but I would love to with you on the radio some day, ideally on public radio! Hopefully one of us will be lucky! :-)
Good luck to you!
