Mary, me

Submitted by mary_austin on May 11, 2007 - 5:47pm. ::

This is me. This is my voice. This is my passion.

Let's discover other Marys around the country who are about to turn thirty and ask them their life story together.

Lovely, fun, young voice... crisp concept. Good stuff.

You have an excellent voice for radio, a clear idea of where you want your show to be headed, and you have a passion for independent radio. Those are all big +'s in my book. If you had a radio show on NPR, I would definitely listen in.

I know there's only a few hours left to vote, but if you want to vote for my audio, here's the website:

Can I have some of it too? Maybe when you get your next show, we can all get it.

Submitted by Mary Whitehead on May 31, 2007 - 3:57pm.

since that's my name, too, but you kept me listening with your bright and friendly delivery and the most original program idea in this contest (haven't listened to 1,452 entries, but I have heard many). Yes, why not a show about Marys about turn 30? It's kinda like that CBS radio segment (I think) that chooses someone randomly from the phone book, travels to the person's town, and learns about his/her life, although this is an entirely original spin, and I offer the example only to confirm how well it can work.

Just so you know, thirty was one of the best and most transformative years of my life (and I trust more are to come). I will enjoy living vicariously through the experiences of all the Marys on your program.

Best of luck to you,
Another Mary

I'm fascinated by the "hero" in all of us. We each have a unique story to tell and I hope with this show, I can focus on a section of women in America, who just happen to share my same name and see how life at 29 is treating them.

I think there's lots of possibilities here...a Mary from the Bronx might have a very different upbringing than a Mary from Orange Co. What about a Maria from El Paso or a Mary raising a family on an Amish plantation?

It could be cool...

thanks for listening, I appreciate it!

You are the hero of your own story, but it's nice that you're showcasing everyone's stories.

Mary ... Great style and warmth, great spirit & vitality, a great concept, and a great title! I hope I get to tune you in on NPR ... your concept & the way you put it across would be perfect. Best of success to you! - Joy

I wish I were a Mary. I'd love to work with you. Sounds like you are at the right point in your career to take on such a project. I really love the idea of Mary, me. And you have that radio voice, that energetic (but not too much) that I tend to like listening to. Good luck with both your Quests.

ps. Cory from Mates of State was one of my first interviews. She is so nice! I was so nervous. Great, quirky music. Did you hear them on the live San Francisco episode of TAL? It was great. Wish I had been there.

Love your radio voice, and when you get done with the Marys turning 30, please feel free to start interviewing the Jill´s who have turned 50! In an age obsessed country, I think this idea you have for a show could actually take off, but I don´t think you need to limit yourself to women. Marcs turning 30 would be equally interesting. And how nicely you convey your passion for radio as well. Great job. Jill

Submitted by mary_austin on May 31, 2007 - 2:31pm.

Why is our culture so obsessed with age? I refuse to believe that I "need" to experience a mid-life crisis at 30, but i find the pressures put out on women transitioning from their 20s to 30s a bit overwhelming.

For someone who doesn't subscribe to cable TV nor religiously read beauty magazines beyond what I glance at in the grocery line, I thought I was beyond the media's reach...but it's interesting how advertising, pop culture and otherwise still make contact.

When will enough truly be enough?

Thanks for the insight...good luck in the competition!

Your voice and delivery completely convey your passion for radio and it is very easy on the ears. Your concept of a Mary cross section of American life is really fun and open ended!

On a bit of a different note, your title freaked me out a little bit because I posted a silly video on youtube last week titled, "Marry Me". So of course I had to listen to you entry and I'm glad I did!

great concept mary...and you do have the talent to make this happen...wish you best of luck!

Don't get the leg warmers thing (are they really coming back?? How 1982!!), but I like the mission of your idea.

I thought my life would take off when I turned thirty. I'm gonna be 37 this year, God willing, and I'm still waiting for my life to take off.

I hope you make this show happen no matter what, Mary. Good luck! :)

You have a hot radio voice, catchy name for a show and a great concept. Two thumbs up from the guy who reminds you of someone you have heard on the radio before. I am 30 and would love to have insight into the woman's point of view on this age. Good luck.

I loved the production techniques you used! I think you could actually *expand* on that premise (maybe call it 'What's In A Name?'), & tackle others after the Mary thing - otherwise, you limit yourself to that 1 venture. You could take a pretentious name, & profile multiple people from different socio-economic backgrounds who share it, or a really 'down home' name & do the same... Run w/ it!
You asked me to tell you more about my idea to bring kids into the audience - & yes, it hit me like a brick (actually, YOU could do that, too - find out how many 'Shanias' are out there (for instance) right now - use the Social Security Administration website to track that... I want to see childhood social issues brought to the forefront - I have several in mind, but this post would be too long (& I'm sure I'm not the 1st or last to think of it)!

Well done, on yours, though. -(;o)~

This sounds interesting. I'm curious to hear what sort of Marys you'll wrangle up for the show.

Submitted by njabro on May 12, 2007 - 2:39pm.

I love your personality, Mary - but midlife crisis that 30? Oh ... for the sake of the rest of us the same age, you're not allowed to talk like that. :)

Submitted by minkyboodle on May 11, 2007 - 6:41pm.

You have an engaging voice I want to hear more of. Your enthusiasm is compelling, and it's an interesting time of life.

Submitted by Rene Gutel on May 11, 2007 - 6:37pm.

i love this idea, mary. i'm turning 29 this year myself and it's given me quite a bit to think about. your voice is engaging. good luck!

Submitted by Steve Stokes on May 11, 2007 - 6:22pm.

O.K. but I'm not totally wedded to your pitch. I mean isn't it a bit capricious to put someone on your show just because their name is Mary?

How about a show called, Let's be Frank?

or...here it comes... wait for it....

The Importance of Being Ernest?

But you do have hostiness and five red stars from me.
