The Guilds

Submitted by Steve Stokes on May 12, 2007 - 10:36am. ::

I have noticed, and maybe you have noticed this too, that there are interest groups that have "materialized" here at the Quest.
I am nicknaming them the guilds.

I noticed these guilds:

Dog people
Food people
Business people
Job people
Travel people
NPR Parody people
Axe that needs grinding people
Storytellers (Story people?)
Kid people and Mom's in specific
Save-the-World people
Egocentric/Ethnocentric people
Looking for a clue people
Cranks and crack-pots
Music Scene people
Veteran DJ's
Podcaster people
Comedians
Kissers
Self-interview Guild
Nerd and Geek Guild
Technology Guild
Insider Story Guild
Education Guild
Frog Guild
Women of Science Guild
Eco-green Sustainable Guild

Have I missed any? Share what has come to your mind?

Steve,
Did you really mean to be so emphatic, "totally shut out." There are so many potential show topics, and only three were going to compete for one spot. Did you really think that all the "guilds" would wind up with a CPB-backed show. Also, it seems to me that a lot of the entrants are going to podcast. You could also look at this as an opportunity for many more voices to be heard, after they gained the encouragement and feedback necessary for them to make that next step (half-full view). I don't want to belittle your feelings, they are valid, I just wonder if in hindsight you will see this differently.

so I don't know how you could belittle anything?

Of course I never thought any but one "guild" could end up with CPB funding. But then again, my question is about where things stand now, what guilds did not make it through to the next rounds.

I was asking for help trying to figure out the answer to that question... for example, off the cuff, it seems as if the business guild might have been shut out...

But i really find the combination of egocentric and ethnocentric to be offensive. There is a big difference between ethnocentrism in the form of domination and white supremacy (or whatever ruling group is happens to be), which might be construed as selfish or egocentric, and ethnocentrism that oppressed peoples utilize as a means to try to strengthen their communities. e.g. Black is beautiful!

Although I am not necessarily a fan of "safe spaces" for separate groups, these imaginary social spaces (which are sometimes ethnocentric) provide people of color, women, and lgbtq people a basis from which to discuss and understand and organize against their own oppression. It can be easier and much less frustrating to begin to work with people that actually understand what you are going through on a day to day basis, and, hence, the safe space approach.

I think it is too easy for white people to discount the struggles of people of color and others, to say that "all racism or exclusion is the same," to whine about reverse discrimination. Especially when whites so overwhelmingly continue to "benefit" economically and socially from the legacies of, as well as ongoing, white supremacist racism.

I think that we should realize that while the end goal might not be to have separate communities (it isn't for me), that sometimes separating off from the rest of society to talk about one's fellow people and their issues, socially and politically, is a good thing. I have a lot of respect for, e.g., the Black Panthers, etc., in this (although not in their gender treatment, haha).

This has been annoying me for like a week now, I didn't want to say anything before, because i knew it might be controversial, but I find this combination to be really offensive.

Furthermore, i didn't even run into any ethnocentric ones, unless you mean, like, hip hop, or the native american entry, or the entry explaining the word Allah, or the Irish storyteller entry, or whatever. I thought that none of those were particularly ethnocentric to the point of being "egocentric," especially because they weren't exclusive of other people necessarily.

And, it must be understood that all of our entries are a product of our background, so while it may be easier to "read" race off of the entry of a person of color or another person that mentions their ethnicity, all of our entries are "raced" and "classed" and "gendered." whether or not these categories are constructed doesn't mean they don't have a real impact on our lives and in shaping our perspective. Also we should seek to understand these issues. I mean, seriously, hello New Historicism.

If I didn't have some 'safe spaces' to address grievances and issues and just vent without being attacked, I could see myself going Michael Douglas in Falling Down on some people...

Not being hostile to you Radiobrat - just curious. Who would self-identify as a junkie or a whore? and who wouldn't take offense if somebody else called them that? It can be a party - and still not have anything broken or stolen. The comment was flip, and I know you meant to be funny, but it dishonors what has happened here - people trying to be open, to put it out there and have it be accepted. Breaking things or stealing things isn't part of that picture, at least through my view of the world as we've built it here. And I think, based on what's happened here when there's evidence of theft, that the powers that be might agree.

Taking 1neself (& others) too seriously causes cancer.

I don't need to be admonished in (yet another) thread that is a made-up non-such to garner attention for its OP & hangers.

Cheers!

I take myself too seriously. Oh, and bingo, I had cancer too...and my mother died of it also, pretty recently. Thanks for pointing out the cause of it. If I'd have been you, none of this would have happened to me. Wish I'd known this secret of life sooner - would have saved me a lot of grief. Thanks for sharing.

I don't think we can form a guild around a first name...

Although I did see Elizabeth Z suggesting that she need to get to know the other Elizabeth better based on their first name being the same...

The Better Betties Guild?

Kinda cool, but more than a couple of entrants based their submissions around frogs (I think because they sound all froggy croaking in the background of their pieces.)

...Authentic People? There's a thread running through many entries that relates to people finding themselves, finding their voices, finding the courage to speak up or manifest their power in some way. I don't know if Authentic is the best term, but I think you get the gist of what I mean. C'mon, Steve, Philosophic Guy, I know you'll have the right term for this!

but authentic would not make up a guild. Authenticness (authenticity) cuts across guild lines. There are authentic Dog people and authentic Business people, etc.

I see where you were going with this idea, Linda, but instead of guild groups, it is more like hostiness atribute groupings which you are identifying..
