Seeing Voices: Baldness, Bond Villains & the Noah Adams Moment

Since stumbling into public radio (and quite happily, at that!), I've been intrigued by the tendency to picture our favorite hosts a particular way. Harboring my own dreams of achieving true hostiness, I called on NPR's Peter Sagal -- a truly hosty host in his own right -- to help me figure it out.

I was so lost in the story I had to listen again for things such as writting, timing, production...it all seemed so seamless in your talented hands.

Good going!

And probably will. Most of us entered this contest in the hope of meeting Peter Sagal (except that one girl who says she wants "a nakey poster of Carl Castle") and here you are interviewing him for your entry! Well! My only real complaint is that they gave me just one row of stars to offer up. Very, very nicely done.

Just as others have said -- this is very NPR and you are an obvious pro. Good job and good luck!

Wow!
I met Peter Sagal once and found him quite pleasant and witty off the top of his lovely bald head. Seems like he had some good advice for you!
The best thing about this piece was the editing, making full use of the 2 minutes! Great work!

Since you're already in the public radio world, that piece was perfect and has that public radio unique style. That's it.

Wow, that's just great. And you have such a nice laugh. I love the choice you made to sometimes have barely overly lapping voices.

I'm humbled to be your "competition."

When I have to vote 5 stars for someone I'm competing against! Rebecca, this is excellent. I mean, it sounds like you are already in radio, so I'm wondering if you don't already have a show? But this was just super well put together, you are very funny, have a great voice, good production skills, timing, etc. I guess knowing Peter Sagal probably doesn't hurt either.

Great set of pipes as "they say". I loved the interviews and it's true; everybody has a preconceived notion of what we look like. Thumbs up, Pussy Galore (hilarious)!

Really liked it and that you threw out at the end the idea of you as 'Pussy Galore'. Clever stuff.

I wanted to hear you laugh. Delightful and very listener friendly. You will go far.

You've got a good voice...a good style...some good stuff going on here.

I rated you lower than I would have otherwise because you're what I call an "A-Sayer." You pronounced (mis-pronounced) the word "A" as "ay" instead of the correct "uh."

Please correct this. I'd like to see you do well (not "good," by the way.)

..it's the theater of the mind. Of course when listeners hear a radio voice their minds start to imagine more than the truth.
I say this because I am 6' 2" weigh 180 lbs and people, upon meeting me say "I though you were short and had lots of hair." I was short and had lots of hair when I was 5.
Ms. Galore I thank you for a fun topic and wish you all the best in the quest! BTW..click my name and "see" Robert Siegel.

Rebecca, this is one of the best all-around entries I've heard yet. You've got the voice and the personality that would make me want to tune in. Your submission is far from humble. What a great idea.

I met Terry Gross once. While she is one of my favorite radio personalities, and she is even smaller than I am, I was terrified. Sure, I can interview anyone, but when it came to interviewing a woman known as one of the best interviewers out there, I kind of froze. I think I may have blushed. But, I was also struck by the fact that she looks nothing, NOTHING, like I thought she would. I imagined her as this sort of chunky, birkenstock wearing hippie with long gray-streaked curly hair -- sort of like my preschool Montessori teacher in the 70's who wore flowy skirts and had a pet parakeet she'd perch on her shoulder. You can imagine my shock when I actually met Terry Gross. She looks nothing like my preschool teacher.

Good luck!

Rebecca,

It's been a full day of slugging through the next to the next to the last day’s entries, and there's been a flood, no a deluge, of less that o.k. entries and I am about to lose all hope for humanity when I hear your entry. Your goddess-like voice anoints my being. You restore my verve, and then some. Oh you must be quite winsome: there is Peter Sagal at your bidding.

And now I wonder, and you know what I am wondering, because your sweet essay led me to this wondering… just how close to Pussy Galore do you look???? Tell me - on your Honor.

Steve
