Evoca - free audio recording site

If you don't have easy access to a minidisc record or a laptop with recording software you can also check out services like Evoca:

http://evoca.com

Evoca gives you a free account and you can either record an MP3 file directly via the browser as long as your computer has a built-in microphone and a new version of Flash, or you can also dial a local phone number and have a voice mail converted to an MP3 file in your account.

Then you can download that file, and reupload it as an entry to the Talent Quest.

For someone who's absolutely techno-phobic, Evoca's phone call option is a good place to start. But you do have to be careful about speaking into the phone as if it's a mic - explosive Ps and overmodulation will cause your voice to 'drop out' here and there if you're not careful.

A techno-phobic friend (whom I told about PRTQ) tried Evoca, then sent me her file - she has a lovely voice but her recording suffered from the above problems. I told her, "listen, make the hour drive to my house and I'll record you," which I did. And she did sound better.

It is possible to go from ZERO knowledge to relative competency in 48 hours thanks to the links on this site. Using the info provided, I gave myself a crash course in what I needed to do to reasonably record myself at home - a cheap Logitech plug-in mic, an audio shareware program (I tried Audacity, there's a discussion of it on another forum - try searching this site), and another program (mentioned by Audacity) to convert the recording to an MP3.

If I can do it, really, anybody can. And the admins here have provided some great links and resources to get you started.

Just don't delay - the deadline's drawing near. Email me if I can help in any way, or answer questions. It's not as hard as you might think.

I used Evoca. It's ok, not good, but if it's all one has, it's all one has. Hopefully it won't derail my dream.

Hmmm. How is the sound quality?

Hi Lu,

We've had at least one entry from Evoca and it's sounds decent. Remember though it's not so much the production quality but what you have to say and how much you pull people in. Personally I found the Evoca recordings to be of a high enough quality that I could focus on the talent.
