Question about judging
8.2.1. Preliminary Review. The Pieces in Round One will be rated by a Preliminary Panel consisting of Judges, editors and staff selected by the Sponsor and/or the Promotion Entities (the "Preliminary Panel"), who will select up to 200 Entrants, based on the Judging Criteria (defined below) and public voting and comments...Entrants will be judged on these equally weighted criteria: creativity, entertainment ability, and audience appeal (the "Judging Criteria").
Does this mean that the 9 person Talent Quest Team of Judges will only hear 200 entries? Or, will they all hear all the entries, make a first cut to 200 and then listen again to cut further to 10 who advance to Round 2?
Just wondering how they will decide who to listen to and who to skip.

Dear Izzi,
Si, es claro!
I am delighted to see that this can be used as a talent bank because I have heard so many excellent people on so many different topics.
I for one would be delighted if I could showcase my pieces and or, get specs (the way writers go to "Writers Digest") to see where the needs are and what's on the horizon.
It would be such a valuable service for the stations and the talent. Especially folks who are new to the biz, or have been out of the loop for a while.
The land keeps shifting under our feet, so any type of a sign in the wilderness would be much appreciated.
Woo-woo that should put some smiles on the faces that are looking so forlorn out there in ENTRY-LAND!
See guys, it's not over until you say so!

Does anybody know WHEN they will be judging or WHEN any of us will find out the results? Will they notify us all or do we need to come to this site to figure it out? I couldn't find that information listed.
Chris

since there are so many to plow through.
I don't know when they'll post the names on the site but the rules say they will call/email the people who make the cut.
8.3.4. Advancement to Round Two. Between approximately June 3 and June 30, 2007, the ten selected semi-finalists and up to 15 alternates will be contacted by telephone and/or email to arrange a personal interview and pre-screening with the Sponsor (the "Pre-Screening").

They've said elsewhere that they'll post the names on June 4. 'Course, that could be late night on June 4 too ;-) I'm really excited to hear the sounds and styles of the judges' cut.

If you look at it logicaly their are only 1368 entries and they are picking 200 for the next round!!! That is only 45.6 hours of content if everyone used the full 2 minutes. If they only had six people listen to 228 entries each aproximatly 7.6 hours they could listen to all of the entries in a single day.
I think the odds of making round 2 are very good, if you have recorded something that will catch and hold someones attention.
Please give me a sympathy star it has not been heard by anyone!!

They are only picking TEN for advancement to Round 2.

Only 10 make it to the next round, but the poster is correct that the judges supremo get 200 that are selected according to the rules quoted above - that was my understanding of it and I think that is fair as any reasonably experienced radio staffer could easily choose the top 1/2 of the pile and probably the top 1/6th... Heck, even I often score stars after the first 20 seconds because it is usually very obviously if something has no chance of being a 4 or 5 star entry. I trust that the judges supremo will get a very carefully thought out top 200-ish to narrow down to the top 10.

I was really excited to enter my idea about Green Parenting - but have found all of the blogging/links/posts/comments/ daunting and so hard to keep up with - Reminds me how quickly things continue to change in all areas of communication! Still, I'm along for the ride and hope that my piece grabs some interest - Hope you'll take a listen -
However it is judged, the vast majority of us are wasting our time. I just wonder about the popularity-contest/campaigning portion of this. As a journalist and geek, sales is not my strong suit, and it's sad that it appears marketing is so involved. So it goes.

Not to be mean, but seriously. YOu may not be good at sales, but you should at least try to stay neutral!
I'm not suprised that there is a pre-panel panel that screens for "the best" I've been a reader for literary contests, tasked with sorting the wheat from the chaff, and passing on the good stuff to "big guns" judges.
Sure, I would like to make it to the next level, but even if I don't this has been great fun, and NOT a waste of time.
and might I point out that this entire contest is a marketing tool for PRX:

I'm glad you're having fun. There are certainly positives to the experience -- meeting fascinating people, etc. -- but as this is likely my only chance to do my life's dream, if I don't make it, it will be a massive blow, and that won't be fun.
And yeah, I knew about it being a sales tool for PRX. That's not a negative, of course. In fact, this isn't a criticism of the contest. How could it be? The opportunities it will provide the lucky three are terrific. Whoever wins, I will be thrilled for them and will certainly listen to and likely enjoy their programs. My statement is merely noting that for many of us, this isn't primarily about social opportunities (not that that is a bad thing; it's definitely a perq). But speaking for myself, this is enormously serious business -- and the stakes are unfathomably high.

it's only your "only chance" if you make if your "only chance"
your entry was great. I enjoyed it very much... and I'm guessing others did as well. I would encourage you to keep at it if this contest doesn't work out.
I too take this seriously, I spent a lot of time on my entry, and truly it would be a dream come true. But its one dream of many I have and one opportunity. And frankly if I were to win it, there's a lot of things that may have to change in my life-- some of which are things that are going really well (like my job).
Anyway I'll shush now. DO keep at it. And please invite me to your next party!!

You assume I am not? Or that I haven't been? :)
SO not the case. When doors are slammed, as they generally are (I'm 45, have been at this since my teen years, and for whatever reason, I am always the number-two pick), I do my own thing. And starve doing it. But I believe deeply in my mission and its importance, so there's no stopping till I am dead.
Good luck, I enjoyed your entry a great deal! And absolutely, you're invited.

Leave it to you to find the meat of the matter - I hadn't caught that in the rules, though I thought I'd read them carefully.
Sounds like they'll listen to them all, but narrow them down to 200. Although (for the sake of their own time and convenience) I guess one might extrapolate from the above that entries receiving very few comments might indicate a lack of content/interest/viability, and in that case those entries *would* be bypassed in the judging.
I just don't know!

Someone else posted it somewhere on the boards before I did, but I couldn't find that post... It had me worried before I ever got my piece uploaded to the site. There were over 300 when I put my entry up.
I just want to know the specifics of this, and if everyone after the first 200 people were wasting their time.
Don't get me wrong, this has been fun listening and interacting with other entrants, but...I don't want to sit here thinking Jay Allison is gonna be wowed by me if he's not even gonna get to my sh!t. ;)

Sorry I've been MIA, my computer took a powder and I've been trying to do damage control ever since! I hadn't seen that judging blurb, either, but I know for a fact that Izzi is listening to entries (how many I don't know but I guess we could go track it). He's a judge and he has definitely been listening to submissions since day one. So hmmm, not sure what to say about it.
Looking for answers? After checking out my submission here you can find them on www.prx.org/pieces/18374.
Are judges allowed to comment? They probably don't have time but, it would be interesting to hear what they think.

Izzi stopped posting comments after some people lashed out at what he said, seeing some of his honest thoughts as disparaging remarks from "a judge." A bit too bad, but if I were a judge I wouldn't be making my opinions public, either.
It WOULD be interesting to hear what they think, a la Simon, Paula and ... the other guy.

Judge my hostiness in the PRTQ
Morning everyone,
Thanks for this thread - we should have addressed this sooner. Here's what's happening with the judging for round 1.
- As you know, entries closed Monday at 11:59pm ET
- ALL of the 1,368 entries will be listened to by a screen team of radio pros.
- That screen team will pass on entries they vote 4 and higher (using the star system on the site) to the full team of judges.
- The screen team process is happening this week.
- The full team of judges (myself included) will listen to all the pieces forwarded by the screen team and vote on those.
- Those pieces will then be reviewed and discussed at a face-to-face meeting, and the judges list of 9 semi-finalists will be determined.
- In ADDITION to reviewing the screen team's list, the judges can each bring forward up to two alternates they feel should be considered by the full group as semi-finalists.
- While all this is going on, the users of this site (that means you) will be voting for the "people's choice" semi-finalist.
- In round 1, the judges pick 9, you pick 1. In future rounds, your role becomes bigger as the pool of semi-finalists gets smaller.
We'll announce the 10 semi-finalists the week of June 4, so double check that your contact info is right.
A few other notes:
- The judges and the screen team are listening to entries and voting based on what we hear. The wonderful (really) promotion you are doing of your entries is something that could impact how site users vote, but it's not what the judges are paying attention to.
- The judges stopped commenting because we did not want to influence voting (how's that for self-important?). We did not want anyone to think, "well the pros liked it, it must be better (or not) than I think."
- About "winning." True, three people will win the Quest. BUT, know that we are doing everything we can to promote this site and your work to stations, networks and producers as a new source for talent - and not just host talent.
Beyond the three winners, our plan is that the Quest becomes a way for perhaps dozens of you to connect with public radio projects as host, writers, producers, whatever. The public radio system is watching - let's make the most of it. One thing though - be sure to tell them you don't bring coffee.
I hope this helps. Maybe I'll make this a blog posting. Keep the questions coming and good luck.
Izzi
Dear Izzi,
Will this site stay up with all the entries after June 4th?
I have only heard about 150 of them and that is voting every night.
Also, I think we would all like to keep chatting. Would it be possible to have this portion of the website be dubbed as Round One and have the next round of voting on Round Two? Or something better than that.

Thanks for all the information. I am very excited with the idea of connecting and collaborating. Maybe you could let the team and especially webmaster construct a forum category regarding this idea as a way to facilitate networking and connecting. Just an idea.
Thanks again.
Speechguy
I can't believe I've entered!
Speechguy says, "Please listen, vote and comment. Thanks."
But, I'm also curious about our essays - how important are they? I've been very uncomfortable with mine, since it was a rough draft - I had no idea I couldn't revise, and my writing method is to spit everything out without filter AND THEN REWRITE to have it make sense (and to clean up the typos). Since the spitting in this case was fraught with nervousness and included a few 'jokes' that only those who knew me would laugh at, I'm very nervous...
so, how much do the essays count? who reads them?
Welcome to HipHop U!

Hi Joan,
Not sure what you mean about your "essay." Is that your audio or something you wrote on your profile page? Happy to try and help with some clarification.
Thanks - Izzi
I seem to be delusional, too! I could have SWORN I answered a series of questions - who is your favorite host, what would surprise people about you, why did you enter, etc - but once I hit enter they disappeared. Can't find them again. Was I on some other site? I wouldn't put it past me....
