Carpe Diem Today?

Submitted by wavemistress on May 13, 2007 - 4:21pm. ::

My entry is based on the premise that we as a society both structure or lives around work as well as derive meaning from it. My hope is to inspire thought about how we 'seize the day' -- or even our lives -- from this notion.

Great analysis and delivery. I like how you developed the idea of time from personal experience and then related it to a broader question about society. What happened to all the time that modern time saving devices were supposed to give us?

On a completely different note, I love the phrase Carpe Diem, too. It's a great phrase but one of the minor reasons why I like it is because it reminds me of the phrase Carpe Noche, which was the slogan for my high school chess team. And I have just revealed more nerdiness than I bet you wanted to know...

Great topic, great voice.
I've thought about this from time to time, and what to do.
But then the day gets in the way.
Definitely looking forward to more topics from your insightful imagination.

Jennifer, you are so right when you tell us that we all need to maybe stop and seize the day.
I was captured by you, what you had to say, and the wonderful sound effects that you chose!

I have listened to this several times and each time have been more than impressed with the quality of the presentation, this coupled with a thought provoking topic makes Jennifer, in by view, a natural presenter. More please. . . .?

I have just revisited this site having had time to think about this entry. It has made me realise that how I live my life TODAY is important. Life is very short and we must ALL make the most of the time and chances we have. Jennifer is clearly a "thinker" with a good "radio voice" and it would be nice to hear more from her.

this morning...how indeed Carpe Diem seems like a phrase for another world someone else's reality when you enter the real world...but how much of your real world is shaped by you and your allowances. Absolutely good conversation piece.
Good luck to you!

Thank you so much for your comments. I know others are thinking about things like this and I'm just not sure where we're discussing them in society today. I am glad to hear you're thinking... I feel strongly we need more of that thought so we can meet and exceed our full potential. You're a smart cookie -- thanks again for the kind words!

The commentary was a beautiful summary of the American life - how our daily routine gets in the way of pursuing what is true to us.

I am so glad to hear you 'got' where I was going with this... There are endless ways we can examine the seemingly mundane to try to take back control of what we thought was lost. Thanks for the comment!

I viewed this a week or so ago and I have since found myself applying 'Carpe Diem' to my every day life. Thank you for such thought provoking comment which can change our lives for the better. After all, we only get one 'go' at life on earth and we must make the most of every second!

I enjoyed your thoughts on this and appreciate that you gave us contrast.

Glad you enjoyed the contrast... I wondered afterwards if I should have given some 'grey,' but time was the ultimate deciding factor. Ironic? I don't think so! Thanks for the comment!

It took me forever to try and decide what kind of demo to do... so many topics, so little time! Thank you for the words of encouragement... they mean so much! (especially after listening to your fab piece!)

A thought provoking essay from a smooth and trustworthy voice that will make us all think a little bit more about how we use our time.

Such a pleasant voice, and your essay was showing that you actually think about things. But I am left wondering about all the other elements of hostiness that we didn't have time to experience.

Steve

Ultimately the paradoxes of life make fools of us all. So if we would be wise we should study life's paradoxes and confront our abject foolishness head on.

Submitted by wavemistress on May 31, 2007 - 2:21pm.

I can only hope so... I had a really had time trying to decide how to pick a topic as my 'coming out' of sorts. After years in TV news, I wanted to tackle something to get people thinking! (the 'dumbing down' of America is another of my 'things') I'm glad you heard that come across. I can only hope the judges hear that special something in my voice... not just the topic. I originally thought I'd talk about how doing a demo for this is akin to deciding what kind of greeting to leave on your answering machine (when I was in college, I'd blast a quote or bit of music into the callers ear and evolved from there). But I thought I'd try something more thoughtful. Thanks for the comment!
