Thoughts on why Americans get such a bad rap and how NPR could help change that by telling the stories of regular folks from around the world.

cool, scratchy voice...I'm curious about your idea. Would you bring in onair guests? Or would you tape it as an audio documentary?

Good luck!

Your entry resonates with me. I like your frank (though not abrasive) delivery and the clarity in your voice, too.

And merci for finally highlighting "beautiful" stories. They need to be told too. Certainly it's important to highlight the atrocities of the world, but when those are the only paragraphs in small town USA newspapers, many folks just begin to believe that the world is bad and those other guys just don't matter.

The expression of the one phrase of optimism in all those different laguages was so beautiful. You made beautiful radio.

Nicely put together in general, actually. If you're from Chicago, you've probably heard Worldview, which has a similar IDEA to this, but which BORES ME TO TEARS. I literally cannot STAND that freaking show, it has put me to sleep at work more times than I care to remember! I think your concept could be done in a much more interesting way, and it IS an imperative point! We need to be connected to human stories from across the globe, in particular to the stories of people in need, or in danger.
A very excellent submission, good luck to you!

Well done. Smooth narration and an interesting idea make this a solid piece. Do you have any experience in radio? This whole essay seemed pretty effortless.

This is so true, americans are very insular; they know about what's going on in North America and care very little about what happens in the rest of the world. Until I started listening to the BBC news I had the feeling that the rest of the world was just a huge rural area where people lived in shacks and never heard of TVs (although I knew that it wasn't so, but the lack of any news from elsewhere made the rest of the world seem stuck in a pre telecomunication age). This program could be the world-wide equivalent of "This american life"; I'm really loooking forward to hear a full size episode of it.

What a fantastic idea. Too many Americans have no idea what is out there beyond our borders. Too many of us have not given it a second thought that people around the world, despite differences in culture, language, history, wealth, or religion, live the same lives--with family, friends, and community. It's time more of us started to appreciate how amazing the world, and all of the people on it, really are. What a great idea for a national radio program!
