Bafflegab 0 - The Persistence of Memory

Submitted by painkillerthepigeon on May 13, 2007 - 9:31pm. ::

I spent Mother's Day creating a piece about where memory is stored in the brain and what happened to my holographic Batman trading cards.

You've got it all going on here: great production, fascinating stuff, and funny. And I caught the way you used the bass drum with, how do you spell that?--E,N,G,RAM--ENGRAM. Nice. And I dig that theme song. Best of luck to you, too, Mr. Baffelgab!

Okay---having a Barbie just doesn't compare to the Batman cards....I like the levelness and smoothness of your voice. Strong use of good vocabulary in your writing (give me 25 cent words over 5 cent words any day!) that engaged my brain as well as my curiosity. Nice job, very professional. Very NPR. Best of success in the contest!

I thought this was very charming & well done. I disagree that it is TAL-esque, though. I think you're stumbling onto your own thing and I would be excited to hear how you evolve if you keep going with this.

I mean-dang! Mighty impressive. And thanks for chiming in on my link as well. Onward and upward.

Very TAL-eque! And honestly, very nice voice, I could listen for hours. :)

Wonderful! Your musings are contagious and will be bouncing around in my brain for days. A well-crafted balance of deep thought and playful memories. (Like a fine meal prepared by a master chef, followed by a Fudgesicle. Perfect!) Would love to hear more.

I guess if a small part of the brain contains the same info as the larger whole, then the brain is a fractal in function - it's already one in form if you look at the tree-like appearance of the branching neurons. Brains are weird things - walking around in clothes that look like men and women. Best of luck. Alan

The details of your storytelling--the intentional pauses, the casual-to-more formal transitions, and music selection--makes the piece dazzling. Great job!

And you're right, I should just start recording folks. :D

Floating around in the background there! Some soft synths and a little crafty effecting! Thanks for the comment, and let me know if and when you get a show up (or if you win, in which case you won't have to let me know!)

I love your voice, what you have to say, in short everything. In fact, all that's left to say is, give us more!

Very nicely done -- an intriguing subject (to me, anyhow) and some excellent production values and voice qualities. (Although I never had Batman cards, myself.)

Good luck, and don't stop with this contest. :)

Thats my favorite part, the pacing is nice. And the beeps or bleeps. The sound quality is nice and the story is thoughtful too.
Its a unique piece, kind of niche maybe? The sound certainly creates a mood, a pretty nice tension between production and something more personal. Just some thoughts.

Definitely enjoyed listening! Thanks for your comments to me too!

...in the toy closet at the Lynches' house, along with the Rock'em Sock'em Robots and a deluxe Lite Brite. It's been awhile.

Devon, I'm late to the party- what can I say that hasn't already been said 114 times over? Great entry, pleasing voice, relaxed pacing, etc., etc., etc. Clearly you have a life in radio, whatever happens with the Quest. I look forward to hearing what you come up with next!

Thanks for the nice response, its much appreciated! I've never done a radio thing before, but I've always loved it from afar! Its very exciting simply to be in this contest, interacting with other radio nerds. A fine collection of people, I must say!

I think that's the best subject line I've ever read in the 'Recent Comments' sidebar:

Oh, Lite Brite...We Hardly Knew Ye

Classic!

P.S. Well, you'll be loving radio from up close from now on, methinks. Ooh, I think I just channelled some Nurmi there! ;-)

Really great submission - I never thought of batman hologram cards before and now I feel like they have brought me greater understanding of how my brain works - who would have thought? You do have an Ira Glass way about you. I want to hear more.

I love the cadence of your voice... like Ira Glass, only more tongue-in-cheekish. Hope to hear more of Bafflegab in the future!

You've heard it before, I'm guessing: You're a genius. You managed to mash up something interesting, with something reallly hip and original. I love the sound you used. Oh, and your jingle? Fabulous. Ok. So, I waited a while to listen to this entry in order to shed any bias I might have had after reading your comments on my page and in the forums, etc. And, what did I hear? Something I wanted to hear more of. You rock. And, you know it. And you should. I was reluctant to put together a top 5 list of favorites, but you're on it.

Gosh, I don't even know what to say! That's so far beyond glowing I feel indecent even responding, but THANK YOU for saying such lovely things! I don't know about "genius" but I did my best, and I'm gratified that people seem to like it!
Thank you thank you again!

Great entry. I too am a fan of the jingle. I think its already stuck in my head! You have a great delivery as well as interesting commentary.

Submitted by flutherofjellyfish on May 22, 2007 - 9:31pm.

This is a really exciting entry! as everyone else has said, very well edited. I AM envious of the jingle...

I love your voice and this feels really authentic, despite the potentially deadly jingle....
