Punk Knitter

I’m Carin Bratlie. I started knitting a couple of years ago. My first project? The ubiquitous scarf. Man, that sucker was UGLY. Now I hang out with a whole cadre of knitters and teach them everything I know. Currently on the needles? A babydoll nightie.

And great production. Loved your voice and writing. This would make a great NPR show.

not sure if i hear a repeating show in this, but then i am not a knitter. i would listen to an hour on knitting but not sure if i would tune in once a week. why not a wider scope - a diy crafters show, profile a different subject each time?

I was supposed to, right? Don't know if I'm hearing the Next Big Host, but I do know that I'd like to hear more from you. Keep up the good work.

Great voice, cool idea, and nevermind the babydoll thingy, I wanna see the knitted alimentary canal!

You know about Roosevelt Grier, right? The pro football star for the Los Angeles Rams who knit as a hobby? He should be an early guest...

I'm so not crafty, but two of my favorite submissions have been craft-oriented. (Have you heard "DIY Nation?")

This is exactly the kind of voice public radio needs. Very charming, funny and smooth - but not in an old-school radio way. Really nice. (Oh, and I checked out the nightie and that thing is fabulous!)

Good luck!

You did a great job with this -- voice quality, production, tempo, keeping it interesting, etc. My only suggestion is I'd rather see this show vs. hear it. I want to see the amazing things you speak of. Have you thought about videocasting?

You inspire me to, well, not take up knitting because sucking chest wounds are not my thing (don't let me even TOUCH knitting needles), but inspire me to appreciate the hard work involved....excellent vocal quality.

Good luck.

I am going to email your piece to my knitting friend. She's addicted and could use the support.
I really liked your piece. Who knew knitting could be a NPR show? You did, obviously. Great voice, great emotion, great production. Excellent job.

I look forward to working with you!

You didn't mention that knitting is a space-sucking addiction that forces the victim to buy way too much yarn of all sorts and then sock it away for future projects - for what is worse than starting something, then running out of yarn and trying to match a dye batch at the bitter end?

I started knitting in November - I brought a pair of knitting needles and yarn to a family Thanksgiving gathering, mostly to occupy my mother-in-law who isn't very spry these days and felt left out of the pre-dinner preparations. She showed me how to cast on and how to knit and purl. Six months, hundreds of skeins, and nearly two-dozen knitting books later (many from old flea markets - love those 60s knitted fashions!) I am overflowing with fingerless gloves, MP3 and cell phone cozies, and of course those ubiquitous scarves. I want to start a very simple pattern for my first coat - an Einstein coat (it doesn't take Einstein to figure out how to knit one), but I am still a little nervous.

Anyway.... I used to be diligent about working out at the gym on the ellipticals and the treadmill every day ONLY because Vicki Howell and "Knitty Gritty" was on HGTV during my workout time. THAT was the only thing that could keep me going. Ever since they took her off, I've slacked off... so who says knitting is for couch potatoes?

I'd love to hear your show, but I'd love to see it even more.

You are TOTALLY ready to stick your toe into the Wide Sargasso Sea that is clothing!

There's just a couple of things to remember.
1. make sure you do a guage swatch. It really matters for clothing.
2. Don't let the pattern overwhelm you. Take it one line at a time... if you don't understand anything, look it up! www.knittinghelp.com is a GREAT place to see technique.

Do it! If you start now, your Einstein coat will be ready for the fall. Go for it, girl!!!

(can you tell that I love this?)

Yeah, I know your type. My best friend is a punk knitter. I don't knit anymore, but I at one point in my life I myself might have been a punk knitter. I love it. It's like, could your show sound any more wholesome and youthful? That's what public radio thrives on. I'm not sure, though, that you could fill a whole show just on knitting. Maybe you'll come at it from an inventive angle. Anyways, good work and good luck!

Methinks I may need to knit myself something bearing my new moniker.

Perhaps I have that elusive "je ne se quoi" that everybody keeps yammering about?

Who knows. I just knows I likes me the knittin'!

Wow you have done some really neat and elegant and goofy and fun knitting things! I read an article about a woman who knits scarves in the shapes of food items. It sounds like a whole sub-culture of knitters! A brave knit world! Great piece!

I had to give you five stars because I thought your piece was outstanding! You have a great voice, you edit your pieces well, and you had great music to boot. It just all tied together pretty well.

I have a very vivid imagination, so when I hear this piece, I think of this old, dusty room full of old ladies who are sitting and knitting long scarves, and then I see you as this colorful kid on a skateboard kicking up the dust and bringing color in the room. In other words, you really know how to make something that seems dull to some really vibrant and relevant. I wish you all the best in this competition, because I think you really have something here. Good luck!
