The Intercontinental
Hosted by Jesse Kaminsky, The Intercontinental focuses on music and culture from around the world. From Latin-Japanese music in the 50's to Yugoslavian mariachi in the 60's to British and African hip hop in the 00's, we examine these movements within the larger political forces in which they exist.
The world of music is so vastly enormous that it would take someone like you to wrap it up in a nutshell so that those of us living under musical toadstools can come out and see what else is out there...without sifting through the dirt.

Everything is influenced and influences... it's fun to trace this all out, like unscrambling a scrambled egg.

It falls to the enlightened, and the intelligent and the sane to take responsibility for the deluded or doltish or insane.
i have never heard anything like this on the radio before, and being a fan of more unconventional world music, this would be a godsend! it sounds like the music you play is obscure enough that each episode would provide gems of insight into the hidden pop culture of regions many are unaware of. can't wait to hear more. good luck!

Keep on rockin' in the free world.
The concept is wonderful and you have this knowledge of world music and you are very interested in it. I know NPR does have music segments, but talking about music and its importance in the country is very strong. This is the best music show so far I have heard, yet.
I would listen to this. I would really like to hear more informed world music programs. Music and social trends are so intertwined it would be really great to find a show that highlights both the music and the political context from which it was born. Good luck!

Pretty interesting. and unusual. there might be a lot of issues that would come up that would be worth exploring though if you did it for real. these might include cultural theory things like discussions about appropriation. or interviews with original musicians. I could see it going in a lot of interesting directions.
Good Luck!

thanks,
I already do a radio show on wmbr in Cambridge, MA. It's similar to the show I pitch here, but not so codified and more improvisational and loose format. More emphasis on the musical themes and less on the political.

and good luck to you too,

This would lead me to what radio insiders call "appointment listening". (I'd make a conscious effort to tune in.)
Enough with the same old jazz and the classical playlists! And enough with the boring world music! This is the kind of music show we need on public radio - stuff too obscure, interesting, and varied for commercial stations, but also stuff that won't put the young folks to sleep.
Thank you. And: Persevere.
