Hard News on the High Seas

This is a story about the time I screwed up on the job as Program Director at KCAW in Sitka, Alaska - much to the delight of a trio of shrimpers out at sea.

This is very well produced, beautifully written, and solidly performed. Outstanding entry.

I felt that cold, November Alaskan rain and the crave for something else.

How are we supposed to compete with someone whose broadcast actually saved people's lives? Sheesh.

I agree with the other posters - this is the only entry so far that's given me goosebumps. Your writing paints a great picture, and you wrapped it up in a soft, velvety (and rather convincing!) bow at the end.

5*!

Good luck - though you don't need it!

You've got gumbo and gumption!
Good for you.

Me?

Instead of music I probably would have blurted out what I was screaming at the TV. "If 51% like you that means 49% of us HATE you. Back, back (now with garlic, a cross and a silver bullet in my hand) back...you antichrist.

I thought just the other day. At least the Kennedy's had offspring who were raised to be in politics. Is this really the BEST the Bush clan could offer us?

That's why you have your show and I'm looking for one. ;0)

PS To judges: of course I am exaggerating and spoofing. I would always pass copy up the chain for review.
(That delivery job for the mob was just for Spring break. And I swear that border thing was all a misunderstanding. I thought the bag of Columbian Gold was coffee.)

... followed by a spirited whoop. Valerie, I really liked it a lot. Hosts tell stories - their own and others' - in a lot of ways. They are able to effortlessly take people forward and backward in time, here and there in space, up and down in emotion. They bring dimension to stories, and yours did that. Your voice, the story, your production skills to assist in the telling - all first rate. I want to hear more. Thanks so much for your submission, and best of luck. - patrick

This is a great story with a lot of personality and I could listen to her voice all day. Well done! It would be great to be able to hear interesting stories from more remote communities as part of a regular show on public radio.

This clip allows the listener to empathize with the shrimpers and the radio host. Whenever I hear a certain president, I cringe and turn off whatever medium he is spewing from. Good god for rebellion, those moments when we don't all follow the rules, and good music to help us through rough times.

Ooh, that was well put together! I like the music, and the cutaways were nicely done too. I could definitely hear this as a segment!
Good Luck!

I recently saw the movie "The School of Rock" where I learned about "sticking it to the man" and something about "hello, cello".
I loved the layering in this piece. The story was neat and tidy, and the clips of sound made it very, very good.

Good for you, valerie. This is an excellent entry. Nice way to frame the story -- through the eyes of your friends. Shows you have personal integrity. Had you turned the singer down, you would have felt like a shallow, slimy person afterwards. I admire that.

Thanks for that comment, Elizabeth. Yeah, that was when I realized what radio can do! Everything that goes over the air touches someone, even if you never know it.

I've caught myself thinking that even if I were armed with all the facts in the world I'd never be able to get up the energy to fight the revolution without a little punk rock in my coffee.
