Tips for the Recently Dumped

Submitted by CourtenayH on May 14, 2007 - 12:25pm. ::

I host a radio variety show called "Live Wire!" in Portland, OR. This is from two years ago - unfortunately, I couldn't fit the whole piece on here, but if you need more tips, come to a live show. I try to get dumped as often as possible to help my “public.” Yeah. You’re welcome.

You made me wish I could still vote. Sorry I didn't listen sooner.

Well written and solidly performed. Have not listened to as many entries as I had hoped to, but glad I ran across yours.

You have a great local show, broadcast on our great radio station, and a great clip of your obvious talent! You and April Baer will probably be duking it out in the finals. Although, it would be awesome to see you two duke it out live. On stage. Idea for your next show?

I like this concept, and you're very zesty in the role! It's refreshing to hear a live broadcast, too, with audience reactions; I love the energy that comes through in this clip.

p.s. thank you for your awesome comment, too. :)

this has a very Miranda July-esque quality to it. I can't tell if it is the background or your voice. I almost expect you to start doing her man voice. If you know Miranda July (I expect you do off of the blow comment) you know this isn't an insult. :)

although obviously it wasn't as "random" as MJ.

I'm a big Miranda July fan, so I really appreciate that. Although I'm not even close to as prolific/arty/strange-in-a-good-way as she is. Or as skinny.

Thanks so much for the kind words.

You hit the nail on the head. Great timing, and keen observation.

There are some positives though...like the all important "Break-up Diet." I love that. I went from size 6 to a 2 in a matter of 5 weeks. ...and rebound guys can be pretty hot, as long as they don't talk.

Singularly self-composed, successfully sarcastic and simultaneously self-deprecating, this woman is one of the funniest people I've ever heard - and seen.

We've gone to three Live Wire shows, and so we get to see the "behind the scenes" view of the radio show. Courtenay is incredibly quick witted. It's impressive to listen to her performing her humorous writing, but even more amazing to see the spontaneous eruptions of wit as circumstances arise. She MUST be broadcast throughout the nation. Brilliant!!

I keep hearing really, really great things about this show. My family lives in Portland, I'm here in Idaho, and my mom keeps e-mailing me links to your stuff. I can't believe you don't have more comments. This was really funny, and I really want to go see you live. Any chance you'll come to Boise? or Salt Lake? This is a five star entry. I really, really want to hear you on my radio.

In between two slices even? You have no idea how much is coming together for me right now. It all makes sense.

Brilliant stuff m'dear. I hope you get to spread your creativity far and wide with the big knife public radio will give you.

Courtenay- you've got some serious cajones, and a smart & snarky delivery that I just lurve. I've always thought Portland was really cool, but you've just given me one more reason to plan another visit soon.

Tight writing, great delivery. That is good stuff!

My daughter is 34, just divorced and moved from Pa to Portland last month.

Where and when can she listen in?

And I want to come to a taping when I am in Portland next!!

To be funny - live - in front of a studio audience?
You've got talent.
Wait. Is that the name of a new reality show on television? It should be the name of your new, national public radio program. Well done.

There is an authenticity in your voice that is refreshing and it is enhanced by the live audience. It is too short though! Thanks for tip #3... something to keep in mind before you are dumped.

Live Wire Radio

Courtenay is one of the funniest, sparkiest people on the planet. I know that certain men's magazine writers don't believe that there are any funny women out there. Here's our chance to get a truly hilarious and smartypants performer/writer launched into the stratosphere of public radio!!!!! C'mon, who's with me???

I loved your tips and your candid performance...very "A Prairie Home Companion".

Submitted by painkillerthepigeon on May 19, 2007 - 8:09am.

Is this live? I think there need to be more live shows in general, and a relationship show, or whatever other content you have in mind, seems a likely candidate! Especially if its all delivered with as much wit and flash as you performed this one!
Great job, good luck to you!

Why is it that the funniest stuff is on radio (including this very funny snippet)? I mean how come all these funny people who want to be on NPR aren't already writing for television and film?? Does this kind of humor just work better on radio? Can't wait to listen to an entire show of Live Wire. Yet another reason to move to Portland, Oregon! Jill
