We’re here to help you understand and enjoy the cultural phenomenon, hip hop – the music and the attitudes hip hop artists bring to their work. We’ll talk hip hop history, have interviews with people in the industry, and lots of music.

Love the idea of a show that focuses on a style of music largely absent from the public radio waves. What I know about hip hop I learned from The Gourds and Ben Folds. And that's just sad.

Great idea, and good luck!

Yeah, Steph...one, for having the courage to admit the Anne Murray and Neil Diamond thing, and two for the younger man. You're my hero.

I think it's as good as the old stuff. I grew up on Anne Murray and Neil Diamond on 8-track; Tie a Yellow Ribbon and The Ballad of Davy Crocket, on our player piano rolls, and Jean Pierre Rampall playing his jazz flute.

I've played in wind ensembles and orchestras most of my life; and yet, I love to crank Aerosmithe as I drive through Highland Park on a sunny day.

I married someone 11 years younger than myself. He introduced me to rap and hip-hop, and I love it. I like the idea of your show because it opens up the opportunity to share this style of music with people who may not ordinarily be exposed to it. Most people don’t understand that it isn’t just noise about people killing each other and taking drugs. It’s a complicated style of music with some deeply introspective lyrics.

Now, I’m going to drive down to the beach with some N.W.A.

seriously, what is hip hop? ask anyone that question and you'll get a hundred or so different answers. what it really is, is a lifestyle. the 5 elements. lyricism, turntablism, graffiti, break dancing, and beat boxing. all rolled into one cultural phenomenon. started in the late seventies with Kurtis Blow and blew america away in the early eighties. since then it has taken over the world. most of the shit you hear on the mainstream radiowaves idealisticly portrays money, women, and expensive cars oh and you cant forget about the fucking "bling bling".so i ask everyone again "WHAT IS HIP-HOP?"

..A RADIO SHOW! Are ya listening, public radio???

(and, if I'm in charge, one of episode would be devoted to whether or not there is that fifth pillar...)

I like what you're doing here. I've heard some other show ideas about hip hop on this site, but it usually involved either playing hip hop or beatboxing for two minutes. You delve more into the history and the poetry of it, which desperately needs to be done in the mainstream media these days.

I've always loved hip hop, but I'll admit that most of the stuff they play on commercial radio is getting boring. Some hip hop artists take themselves way too seriously, and some of the mainstream stuff isn't as enlightening or as fun as it was with Run DMC or Big Daddy Kane in the mix. I believe one radio show could change that.

I really like how you laid out the program's structure (according to your comment to Lakeisha). Sounds super interesting and infinitely worthwhile. Good luck!

haven't listened to your submission yet (due to technical difficulties), but I think your point is exactly THE point of having a show like mine on the air - simply because it is NOT everyone's pint o'ale. I hear John Prine on NPR at least once every 6 months, but unless Terry Gross interviews a hiphop artist (or, there's some rap controversy in the news), there's nothing really dedicated to hiphop culture, rap, anything really 'youth' or 'nonwhite' - not during prime time, anyway.

I'd like to have my radio station broaden my boundaries a bit, because I already pretty much live within my tastes.

This is great! My only complaint is a technical one, but that has nothing to do with this part of the contest. I love the idea, I hate it when people refuse to accept hip hop as an art form. It [the non acceptance] is pretentious ignorance.

Good luck, ma'am.

And I completely understand your pain at my production 'values', seein's how you ARE a radio professional, after all.

Honestly, it pains me, too, but being unemployed, a $20 mp3 recorder was the only means available to me for this.

I was hoping you'd mention the 4 elements of hip-hop. They're forgotten by most people...which is just a shame.

I want to hear this show on the radio. Please make that happen, no matter the outcome of this Quest. Good luck, and keep in touch! *hugs*

Really interesting idea. Hip Hop has history and cultural depth (and breadth - love the international perspective!) that most people never think about. You might have room for a segment on the poetry behind it as well. Good luck!

...surely there is space on the radio dial for this. Like a few others have said I do not think there is enough diversity in public radio anyway but I think it is especially true in music.

My affiliate has Thistle and Shamrock (of course), but not Afro-Pop (of course, of course.) While I'm all for internationalism (I'd write a letter pleading with them to keep 'The World' if they ever dropped it), Celtic music?? I live in an area where people are conservative - not necessarily (but often) politically, but conservative in their lifestyles. Change, difference... neither are looked highly upon. But, shouldn't public radio be the one place where diversity of experience can be... uh, experienced, without a sense of threat? I believe it can be that place, and should be that place.

oh, soapbox-city, here. sorry. thanks for your comment!

Joan I must say as a fellow Hip Hop radio show host, that I truly admire what you're doing. It's nice to hear something fresh out there that is exploring Hip Hop aside from what is often times commercialized. On my show I strive to bring something fresh from an indie media perspective. Often times i'll incorporate public affairs segments from the perspective of a young Hip Hop head, in the hopes of educating people not only about Hip Hop, but also about the various national and also international pieces I often times present as well. Best of luck to you, and keep up the good work!
