Making a difference with smiles on our faces

Excerpted from eco-politics show I hosted on community-supported radio in Tampa. Public radio should be entertaining, informative, inspirational, relevent, AND important. In a media-glutted world, we must craft media that *matters*.

Hi,
Your show comes under the umbrella of Sustainability, and I wanted to keep in touch with you.
No matter who wins, lets all of us eco-green Sustainable folks stick together, and lobby NPR for our kind of show.

It's always exciting to imagine a new and fresh voice greeting me on NPR on a weekend or weekday. I 'd really enjoy to hear RL on a daily basis.

But, and I've said this elsewhere, I think the main thing to bring to radio is a little pizzazz, a little "wow" factor. I know public radio has its style, now endlessly parodied, but the thing is to take it into the future.
I wonder how to make eco-politics "sexy"? I'm not sure, but it is desperately important to do so at some point, the younger generation have to be taught better than mine was what the issues are at stake!
Sounds like you have a great backlog of material, I'll try and check your show out!
Good luck to you!

Thanks for the kind words. I'm literally an amateur as well. WMNF is a community-supported radio station, funded by the local listeners (like an NPR station but not affiliated with a national network). I volunteered for them as a pledge-drive phone answerer, ticket-taker for fundraisers, public service announcement writer... and, once I sold them on a show concept and learned some of the ropes, I volunteered as a broadcaster. I'd be doing the show today if I hadn't moved out of the area...

Have you heard THIS IS HELL from Chicago? The host Chuck Mertz is the fast, funny, and an excellent interviewer.

Insightful, intelligent & articulate; much more than just a fabulous voice, Randall has a gift for making translating complicated issues, making them accessible & intelligible. The Environment has been on the front pages recently, rightfully so, & the public is hungry to know how they can make a difference.

In spite Al Gore's Oscar-winning documentary, environmental issues often get short-shrift in the media. Greenwaves is just what this country needs. Rand does his homework and presents the issues in a convivial yet educational manner.

This is great radio with excellent content, thoughtful dialogue, and the right balance of questions and observations. This is the type of environmental and political programming our country could use more of. Listeners to radio deserve facts, logic, and respect and this is a great example of all three. This gets my vote and I think that my Saturday morning would be complete with Car Talk, Wait..Wait Don't Tell Me, and Greenwaves!

Rand has the voice that commands attention, presents authority, and creates interest on the part of the listener to be involved with the issues being discussed. Rand is a perfect host on the air, inquisitive, fun, knowledgeable about pressing issues of our time. He deserves a chance at his own show on air.

Hey, this guy is good! He needs his own show on NPR and hopefully if he gets it, the environment will be the headline. Go Rand!
