Proper Use of Music Clips

Hello, hello!

Before I say anything, let me just tell everyone that I am sorry if this question has already be answered. I am a bit obtuse when it comes to forum navigation, so please forgive me.

Can anyone shed some much-needed light on how to properly use music snippets in the 2-minute audio clips without dipping toes/drowning in the nebulous pool of copyright violation? Can this be done? Should this even be attempted during the first round, or should we save our skins from potential disqualification by nixing the audio?

Whoo- that is a lot of interrogation there, isn't it? Thanks for all your help!

Regards and good luck,
Masahana Kato

Hi Masahano, thanks for the question.

We do address the question of music clips in the Help/FAQ here.

It is indeed a nebulous pool of risk out there in music copyright/Internet land, generally you should either use cleared material (stuff you have permission for or public domain and Creative Commons licensed music) or think about how well your approach might fare under Fair Use standards.

I used a poem and two snippets of sound effects. I was granted permission to use all three from three separate entities. It was fairly painless!

Jake-

Thanks for clearing this up. I think I'll just play it safe and omit the clips.

I asked (and was granted) permission to use part of a track before I used it. Generally, that's the best way to go if you really want the music.

There are quite a few entries with at least some music. Hmmm . . .
