Motherboard & Byte

This is the tail end of a 1 hour radio show answering folks' computer questions. It is fictional, but representative of the show I would love to produce for Public Radio. I tried to incorporate some of the ideas we have for the show and the potential for humor as well as information.

We can always use more tech talk on the radio.

You have a kind voice and a strong concept. Kind is important because most people I know learn about the computer the way they learned about sex. Each friend tells them a few things and then you have to piece it together yourself. Forget the books, there isn't a illustration for a lot of stuff that shows up on the screen. good work.

Your show is so pragmatic as to have universal appeal! I think you're very hosty - I liked the "email intervention" piece a lot, and also your "surprise guests." You might have people send in their funny computer stories too - like the time my client trashed the trashcan on her Mac... Thanks!

Yes, I think stories from folks would be a key element, as so many of us have them, and we could even throw in some of the myths, like the help desk that got the call for the broken "cup holder" on the computer.

Cheers and thanks,

Carrie

I'm a fan of Terry Gross and Fresh Air. Ms. Gross does her research, is friendly and interested in her guests. I think you project the same calm, engaged tone with a strong grasp of the subject at hand. You go girl!

Great idea! And your voice is nice, too! Your personality seems patient, helpful and understanding.

The content is really good, but the monotone nature of your voice had my mind wandering. Change up your tone a bit and it will be even better.

Since people are having computers in every household, I think this is a very useful show. This is Car Talk for computer geeks. I like your description that you need some humor and I think so. It seems your a little hesitant, but open up a little bit and share your knowledge of computers. This is very useful show.

I would definitely tune into this show! Good lead in...stories form around the world sounds fascinating.

It's a good idea for a show, I think.

Do you make house calls? It is a beautiful day and I am sitting in front of my computer. I should be outside gardening.

You have a nice soothing voice.

Cheers!

You are a shoe-in for the finals. Reason? You already have critics!

Carrie has a relaxed way, which is nice, but unless the information was specific to what I was looking for, it might lose my interest. Could use a little more spark and cadence when she talks, particularly since it's all voice; you have to depend on keeping your audience solely with that. They have to want to tune in again. Good idea, I just think it could use a some 'oomph.'

Submitted by Carrie Campbell on April 17, 2007 - 12:06pm.

Yes, it is hard to give the show "oomph" with my lonely little $20 computer microphone. This Round is supposed to be about me and hopefully show that I have a decent radio voice, some intelligence and maybe a little audience appeal, all in 2 minutes! Thanks for your comment and for listening, I appreciate it.

Everyone at work would tell you I need a show like this. ;-)

But this isn't the sort of information that works well on radio. Now, to be fair, we're only hearing a smidgen of what Carrie has in mind.

To make this broadly appealing it needs to be more than a user manual approach. The secret of Click and Clack is that it isn't really a car repair show...

Carrie, I DO like your friendly voice and how clearly engaged you are with the topic.

Do you podcast at all?

Submitted by Carrie Campbell on April 16, 2007 - 11:46pm.

I know exactly what you mean about Car Talk and I see the show having a similar appeal with segments like "Guess the Forgotten Password" and "E-mail Interventions." Hopefully it can be helpful at the same time. The great thing is that you can supplement with information on the internet. It's a work in progress. Thanks for your comments.

bigger than a niche...
it's like Click and Clack on cars, only it's perhaps even more essential info these days. I'd have to tune in, at least on an as needed basis via the internet.

so good to hear technical info presented by someone who wants people to understand, not be impressed by your technical superiority.
Nice name too.
would you make the show funny like Click and Clack?

Submitted by Carrie Campbell on April 16, 2007 - 4:27pm.

I have to admit that the show ideas, so far, for Motherboard and Byte are inspired by Car Talk. We'd like it to be funny, approachable, useful, not too techy. The audience we want are the folks that think their question is too stupid, when really most people don't know how to do it. Anyway, thanks for your comments.
