The Essence of Hostiness

Submitted by BURNcast on May 14, 2007 - 3:47pm. ::

PRTQ gives a really clear description of “hostiness”. But it wasn’t enough. I wanted to know what “hostiness” meant to others. Rather than pitch a new show idea or assemble a reel of my past work, I went to a party and asked folks about the meaning of “hostiness”.

She has an easy sounding voice, unlike many other radio host and a way of making you feel like your sitting in her living room just shooting the shit. I like that very much.

I've been listening to DaBomb for a while now, and while her voice is in itself quite lovely, what I really like is the way she can be enthusiastic about her topic, yet neutral at the same time - getting her interviewees to go further into their topics without interfering or injecting too much of her own opinion. When silliness is the order of the day she can play with the best of 'em; when she turns to more somber topics - well pull over the car, it's not safe to drive while tearing up.

Rarely does one come across a talent that seems undeniably destined to be part of our future. BURNcast is that talent, and TALENT SEARCH would be well served by recognizing her "bestiness". VOTE FOR BURNCAST!

I liked your set-up to your party outing, but really liked your on-mic presence at the party. It was just slightly, different. Hard to explain, but I think, in part, it was because you were showing what you said you do ... that you are quiet and listen. Your phrasings were a little shorter, prompting the person to talk. Your follow-up questions were the same - quick and to the point - and then back to your interviewee's point. So I liked both parts - your in-studio hostiness, and your ability to bring some of that, but suppress some of that, too, when you're out and about. Impressive and appealing. Good luck - patrick

The word kinda creeps me out, but if it's "hostiness," whatever it is, you've got it. Great delivery, and I admire your statement of principles as an interviewer: It's the person being interviewed who is the star of the show. Well done!

How refreshing to hear from someone who's just beginning her broadcasting career and is clearly excited about the challenges and opportunities it offers. You have a pleasant, natural voice. I'd like to know a little more about the sort of show you envision, although I'm not sure how much that really matters (to the judges) at this stage of the competition. Good luck from another Nevadan!

i have some thoughts that are percolating in my mind as to what kind of show to develop, smartblonde.

my current podcast is something that i'm only presenting here as my body of work. my feeling is that the podcast currently produce is perhaps not something that can stand alone as a national show. i'm actually really protective of my community in this way and maybe i should have thought it through when i used it as my username. also, i feel my audience base is rather small market. Only 40,000 citizens live in Black Rock City. And I just saw on the PRX website that public radio has 25,000,000 listeners which I thought was enormous. But then I checked, the U.S. has population of 281,421,906 people (census, April 1, 2000). Which leads me to wonder what public radio's market share is.

i guess what i'm looking for in terms of new content for the PRX is fresh material that speaks to a younger demographic in their language. i just hung out the other day with a competitor on the Talent Quest (holla Girthy!) and i really like his voice in terms of representation of his generation.

i'd also like to see PR become more diverse.

curious though, smartblonde, what you would kind of show you would appreciate, if you would care to share.

Among the best of the best (which for me includes Ira Glass, Warren Olney, Michele Norris, Renee Montane, Jason Bentley, Tom Schnobel, and Nick Harcourt), you stand out like a glowing ball of fire. Your hostiness, I bow to you, like the royalty you embody. You have already won the hearts of thousands, a quest is simply another accomplishment in your lifelong journey of success. DaBomb has such a lovely voice, I could listen to her all day. Bring on the genuine interest, respect, and insight she brings to her subjects, and you couldn't ask for anything more in a top-notch radio host.

She is the only talent I can think of who could first fill Terry Gross' shoes, then stretch them out, add a sexy ankle strap and turn them into a brand new pair of her own.
