Royce
Royce is a retired horticulture extension agent who has been living with HIV for several years. Recently he has been suffering some cognitive impairment due to his illness. He wanted me to record some memories, especially those related to his knowledge of native plants, before he loses them.
This is an evocative and haunting piece! It was a privilege to spend a few minutes with Royce's stories and Richard's editing. It made me hungry for more!
wow...beautiful...but who are you? Who has the hostiness?
Have a listen to me if you get a chance...

I just wanted to thank Richard for choosing me to interview for this piece.
I am amazed that he preened out one minute and forty-five seconds of the most meaningful points of our six hours together without even talking with me about what the final recording would contain.
I am very lucky to have wonderful friends and family who support me emotionally and with their love. I plan on being among and with them for many, many years. How could anyone think of being without or leaving such amazing people.
Thank you to everyone who voted and/or commented on this piece.
I can totally hear the sadness and experience and a full life behind the voice of your subject. thanks for sharing.
I would love to hear more of your voice and hosting abilities. If you can put something like this together, you've got what it takes.
Check me out and let me know what you think! All opinions welcome!

Thanks! Christopher.
True hostiness: an interviewer who knows how to put his subject front and center, and add just enough of his own voice to build rapport with listeners. Bottle this guy. I could listen to 60 minutes of his interviews every week.
A deft, moving mix of memories and evocative words. The clip really communicates the sadness in the idea that Royce will lose such wonderful memories. Thanks Richard! - Jessie
I want to thank everyone who has voted so far and left a comment. Just knowing this has touched a few people really means a lot. Since these are posted rather anonymously I cannot thank you all in person but don't think I don't notice.
As sparse and lyrical as a poem, this clip elegantly grafts Royce's initimate knowledge of gardening with his memories of coming out to his father into a heart's blossom. The rich themes suggested in this narrative beg to be further developed in the context of living with HIV and the gift and vulnerability of memory for us all.
How wonderful to give a voice to someone who is near the end of their time here. A meaningful and thought provoking short piece. Thanks!

I'd love to hear more of this interview. RichardZ must have asked all the right questions.
The ending of this clip made me want to weep as it so perfectly captures Royce's essence - his joy, his knowledge and desire to share the knowledge with palpable warmth. I could go on and on but I need to get back to work.
Incredibly well done but waaaay too short.
I want to hear more. Good introduction to the topic with an excellent human interest hook.
Richard, I really enjoyed this piece. First person interviews like this (and the StoryCorps pieces on NPR) are part of what differentiates this medium for me, and one of the value-adds that public radio can provide that no other form of popular media today is.
Very moving, Richard -- there are so many layers, yet the pace is not rushed. I also loved the nature sounds in the background.

The importance of what has been captured in this 2 minute recording extends beyond what Richard Ziglar had hoped to capture... ,it extends into ones conscience.
I concur; this piece gives a nice sense of being to the subject. I find that it sort of soothes us through his memories... I definitely felt content when it ended, but I wish that dag-on public radio lady would go away and just let me keep listening!!! ;-) Nicely done, RichardZ.
A beautiful story in such a short time. I would love to hear the rest of Royce’s memoirs in full. You have captured my interest. 5*
Great interview source, lovely work and great Southern accents!
This captures Royce's voice with authenticity and poignancy. As a long-form journalist, I am awed by anyone who can create a narrative and emotional arc in two minutes. Rich and important stuff.
