Gender on the Mic

Submitted by Elizabeth Venable on May 14, 2007 - 6:37pm. ::

I'm proposing a show that looks at gender issues in society. It would include women's or lgbtq issues, but also would discuss intersections of gender with topics like race, ethnicity, environmental, medical, men's and socioeconomic issues. Music courtesy of: http://www.myspace.com/jenolivemusic

This show sounds excellent. I really hope you win and we all get to hear it!

You have a great style and delivery. I think your topic sounds intriguing. I studied feminist theology at Drew University Graduate School and I loved the class. It opened my eyes to so many of the issues that you intend to explore. Best of luck! Please let me know what you think of my entry "All Fired Up." Talk about a gender issue. Hmmmm, are female bosses more difficult to work for? I know a lot of people who would answer "yes." If this is true, why? This could be a really interesting discussion. At one point in my career I thought that some of the most successful women at the company I worked for believed that they had to become the worst of what men have been in order to succeed. This could be a really interesting discussion.

it made me really want to hear the show in action!

Like the others, I wanted to hear more of you in there - I think one of the aspects of public radio that should go away is this sense that one shouldn't inject themselves into stories or shows. Certainly, it shouldn't be like Howard Stern where it becomes all about the host, but I think it gives the listener some context and adds interest when the host allows a bit more of their own story and perspective to seep in.

I'm sure that will happen more as your show progresses, though. I look forward to hearing it!

Great work, and good luck!!

I was just looking at your profile... Ecology and Environmental Science to Dance history and theory to a Public Administration program? If that's not grounds for automatic hostiness, I don't know what is!

Submitted by lakeisha on May 27, 2007 - 1:14pm.

I think you have hostiness and that will matter most, regardless of your subject matter.
Good luck to you on this quest!

So upbeat. This is definitely an interesting subject with lots of room for engaging stories.

I totally agree with you that gender is an area that is definately in need of more exploration by the general public. Being that i live in san francisco i would say that i'm fortunate to live in one of the more accepting cities in the world when it comes to not only exploring gender but also redefining the term it self. I think this is a great concept and a much needed one as well.

excellent job. i look forward to tuning in.

for the supportive comment! yeah, redefining it would definitley be a critical part, and also expanding the scope of the idea in the public imaginantion (beyond women vs men) would hopefully do a lot. but then if you live in san fran you know exactly what i am talking about (trans, etc).

Lots of room for potential. I'd be very interested in at least finding out where a show like this might go from it's outset.

Good Job- Curious to see if NPR would turn this into a show...

Very strong concept and very well presented. I think there are definitely hints of your personality within your clip and it is not as banal as you might think. I particularly like the idea of a cross between This American Life and The Splendid Table. I know you were referring more to format, but I found myself mixing the titles, like This American Table or The Splendid American Life. I'm not quite sure why I mentioned that, but I found it amusing...

This is excellent. The topic gets such superficial treatment in most current media. I also admire your resume and I really hope you get a shot here.

I would be very interested to hear what you'd come up with for a show like this. I would like to have heard more about you in this 2 minutes, tho. You seemed cut off at the end...I wanted more! :)

Good luck to you, Elizabeth.

If I could do it again I would have A. put in more about my personality, which is not as banal as it comes across and b. made the first 15 seconds a lot more exciting. But, hey, like i have said a bazillion times, I totally don't expect to win, and part of that is finding out about the contest way late. I definitely feel satisfied with my entry because the premise is good, it would be a good show, my voice sounds pretty decent, and the recording is clear (and was done at home!). Plus I figured out how to make my mixing board usb thingy upload for this so it makes my regular programs much better. I am not really looking at this as my shot to radio glory but I totally would have been kicking myself if I didn't at least enter, no matter how late I entered!!!

I think my shot to radio glory will come next fall when I move to LA and whore myself out for free to all of the multitude of radio stations there, hahahaha.

But my regular programs are much better in terms of personality. Unfortunately most of them live on minidiscs and stupid sony didn't make it so I could upload them digitally!!!! and my audio card sucks so it makes anythign analog sound really bad (to my ears anyhow)! damn them!!!! :) hahaha

Thanks,

Elizabeth
