The Most Important Question....I Can Think Of

Here's a segment for a show idea - Mental Floss Radio - that my colleagues and I have been working on. First part is the segment, second is me discussing it. The show is "trivial trivia" with a heavy dose of dry humor. It's from the school of thought that drives The Daily Show or WWDTM.

Interesting (gameshowish), nice production work, great voice and delivery. Best to you.

Am I the only one to notice that there was no question important or otherwise? I mean you just started firing off fact about the Dodo bird. Maybe that's a sign?

That'll teach me to submit entries while sleep deprived. There's supposed to be my friend Mary's voice saying (in a ditzy Valley-Girl-esque voice) "So what's a dodo bird, and where'd they all go anyway?" I even have the sound clip of her, I just totally forgot to include it. Good catch!

You've got a strong presence as a host and this mini-production is well done. I'll confess my strong bias in this process: I'm looking for something really new and fresh -- even if it's only in the sound of somebody's voice. You sound pretty much like the familiar radio dj, and I confess I'm equally lukewarm on the trivial trivia concept. It's a tough one to pull off -- but keep at it...I'm willing to be convinced.

You've touched on an issue I cover frequently with the student stations I consult for. There's a fine line between sounding "professional" and sounding "hopelessly commercial". In retrospect I probably should've "stretched my vocal chords" a little bit and done more of my accents and voices, of which I can do several. Some even convincingly. :-) But at the same time, that path can easily lead right off a cliff into sounding like a crappy medium-market "wacky morning show".

I love the concept of a trivia show and being goofy. Since the first round is about hostiness, you passed that. I woant to hear the whole show and how it comes to fruition. Good luck.

I like it! Great vox and good engineering supporting a very fun concept with good writing.

Good luck!

Thanks for the kind words. I was hoping to ask a question in general...was the entry "too produced"? I know the point of the PRTQ is not to show off our production skills, but at the same time, I didn't want my entry to sound like crap.

The thought I had was that when you're driving a nice car that's covered in mud and scrapes, people don't notice how nice the car is. I've also reviewed several pieces where the talent might've been decent but the sound quality was so bad it distracted from the talent too much.

I imagine this is the classic "chicken and egg" problem with the PRTQ in general?
