The Bag Lady Strikes Back

Ever wonder how seemingly trivial pieces of legislation affect all the little people and why people safer when they have plastic bags? I do.

I would personally be devastated if plastic bags were outlawed in my area. It's already in the "I'm Just a Bill" phase in Chicago. Will the North Shore be next?

Here's the thing. Plastic bags keep my life on track. I use the empty plastic grocery bags when I walk my dog. I make sure that the bag is clearly visible in my hand, and dramatically clean up after her. I like to promote the idea that cleaning up after your dog is a good thing, especially accompanied by a bag that, when full, clearly says “THANK YOU!” on the outside.

More importantly, I know that it’s time to go grocery shopping again when I run out of them. I’ll go to the bag of bags, pull the last one out, and exclaim, “Oh my God! We must be out of milk!”

I think they started charging 15 cents per bag (by an act of the legislature) and EVERYONE immediately started carrying around their own bag. very easy, very smart -- and a lot less plastic in the landfill! (or turtles' mouths)

by the way, you as a dba person are in a power place as far as straws are concerned! I have banned serving straws in drinks, all drinks. And I tell people that I have boycotted straws and everyone thus far has accepted that. I am sure down the line someone with lipstick on who has drunk too much will disagree with me, but really, all those plastic straws, again, largely discarded within 2 seconds, are such a f*****n' waste!! of energy and landfill bullshit! SO go ahead, tell people that you are boycotting straws, people actually pay attention when you bring it to their attention.
in peace and good health

ah, fellow dba lady, i am soooo with you!!
i have touted around cloth bags for donkeys years now, gotten into rows with shopkeepers who have told me it's the law to give me a bag, and what not! some of my bags read "stop using plastic bags", others say things like "does this bag make my arse look fat" and others say nothing at all but i like them anyay. when i go to the farmer's market i have a zillion cloth bags on me and if i see people requesting plastic ones, sometimes i share.... and the whole darn coffee thing!!!! jeeeeeez what is that????? not only is it insane in the first place, but people discard said bags TWO SECONDS LATER!!!!! i also HATE HATE HATE those god damn platic bags of coupons that are strewn into our vestibules, 3 or 4 per apartment. I myself collect the blocks worth and put the coupons to be recycled and the bags i use for my compost but i don't even use that much compost so i have way too many of those in my apartment, and I also am well aware that my drop in the ocean is just that..... so i say a revolution is ABSOLUTELY in order, let's converge, put heads together and CHARGE!!!!!!!!
stop using plastic bags
NOW!

A good thing, it needs to be documented in case it really does disappear from our landscape. The plastic bag has become a bit of a cultural icon -- with appearances in the arts -- like the movie American Beauty (I love that scene)-- and appearances in street fashion -- like the ladies on my block who cover up their hairdos with them when it rains, or the street guys who tote all their possessions in clusters of them.

When the pesky bags do go away I hope that dog poop still gets picked up somehow. That's the only upside I see to the bags and conversely, the downside to their disappearance. Stepping in dog poop can ruin your whole day.

It is the little things that make a big difference. I enjoyed this discussion of an example of not accepting something, just because it is the standard "way it is done". The speaker's voice is upbeat and pleasant, and most importantly- sincere.

I love this idea. Its all about the little things. After all, what are big problems made up of if not a series of little issues all working together? Expose away bag lady!

if ever new york were a town of something, it's a town of bags. and straws. bags and straws. i appreciate your concern both for the excess of bags and for the unfortunate truth that every legislation has its pros and cons (less bags, less jobs for bag makers). nice work, bag lady!

Submitted by moira on May 19, 2007 - 10:58am.

if it was socially acceptable - i would drape myself in plastic bags... not! (borat-inflection used)
