Cereality
I'm submitting this Marketplace piece because I think I turned it from fluff into a story about cutthroat business competition, the psychology of human behavior, and how we all turn our childhoods into a type of fetish.
Plus I got to use a bunch of really corny puns.
Fluent, professional delivery, clearly constructed, wonderfully produced. This was solid from start to finish; glad I listened.

Cereous -- no, I mean seriously. Now I know where my fuzzy slippers go when they say they just need to go get some fresh air.
a cereal bar just open near Northwestern Univ. too, it really surprised me to see cereal taken so seriously by business.
Interesting piece! Good luck.
This was a really professional piece, and definitely kept my interest!

Keep on rockin' in the free world.
Awesome! I loved the delivery... and who doesn't love the idea of cocoa puffs topped with chocolate syrup??
It is a great commentary on small business and the entrepreneurial spirit as well! I could see myself spending way too much time and money at such a cafe... I think your choice of using this piece shows off your humor, your professionalism and your great chops. Nice job!
Interesting and clever. Good luck!

They did it. You can too.
That was a terrific piece about cereality. However, being a host and being a reporter are two different things. I see this as more of a report, but you did ask good questions and I like that. Try to expand to include yourself as the narrator or the background person of the story.
That is a good point. The reason that I chose 'Cereality' as my entry is because it was an excellent example of the public radio show I want to do.
It had the two things that I believe FEAST will have.
1. We'll use so much natural sound it'll become our hallmark. The same way that TAL uses the single guitar riff, FEAST will use almost over-mic'd sound. You'll hear the food sizzle, the pigs squeal, even the pages turn of a cookbook.
2. Each episode will be built around a theme, a theme that maybe won't even be explicitly said during the show. These piece would fall is a show about childhood, or Saturday mornings, or even 'mixing.' We plan to frame other shows around racism, fatherhood, even bees.
The goal is totally break out of the mold and do a food radio show that is NOT from a celebrity chef whose ego is as big as his toque.
Feast is a radio show, for people who eat.
Vote for Cereality!
Simple, fun show idea - good read, very good writing in-and-out of the tape. I'd like to hear more! I think you would have been well served to put the show idea right next to the playback button, rather than buried in the comments.

I used to work at a pizza place right around the corner from the book store at Penn. Lots of hungry people in that neighborhood. The owner once told a woman complaining about her burnt Calzone, "Lady, your head's burnt." I wonder what happened to him.
Thanks for the expert storytelling and sound mixing.

I too, thought that came straight from an MP program. Great delivery!
Crunchy, too!

I like how you mixed a bunch of different audio feeds, from background in the field to a personal interview to your own commentary. Great work, tasty subject! Did it really run on Marketplace? Good luck!

Mmmmm. Tasty idea. Sounds great, and just filling enough!
Great editing, nice voice. I totally agree with this comment, "FAR too many shows just fall back on the 'host' + 'guest' + 'microphone' = time filler". I love to hear more pieces that are in the "field". I think you're heading in the right direction in that regard, plus I'm a foodie so I love the premise of your show.

I like the idea and execution of this food show of yours.

Aries - great piece - I'm no closet mixer, but I love my vanilla almond cruch! Maiken
This piece is an example of the show I'd like to host. A show that's all about food, but not stuffy and not all about the latest person who's pushing yet another cookbook.
The title is: Feast -- A radio show for people who eat.
We'll focus on a theme each week, and every piece will sound natural sound, much like Cereality. FAR too many shows just fall back on the 'host' + 'guest' + 'microphone' = time filler.
I really want to make people feel like they're out in the world. (Or at least, sitting in a bowl of cereal.)
Good luck everyone!

Sit in a bowl of Grape Nuts. Anything else gets too soggy too quickly and you might drown. But Grape Nuts absorb all the milk, leaving you a crumbly, milky terrain on which to rest yourself, or maybe even go for a short hike? Imagine Cinnamon Toast Crunch though, or Honey Bunches Of Oats (with Almonds)...great to eat, but they just disintegrate in the milk. Certain death!

It what every radio piece should sound like. The reporter/producer took a mundane subject matter and turned it into something informational and interesting. I also liked her voice and delivery, which is strong and clear and not nebbishly like a lot of today's public radio talents. This piece also brought back a lot of childhood memories of mixing crazy cereals together! Great job!!
This was SOoo pro, it could slot right in on my afternoon dial!
We have a Cereality in downtown Chicago too, and it is BIZARRE! I took a date there once, it was a good time, but paying eight bucks for a bowl of Cinnamon Toast Crunch given to me by a surly teenager in pajamas left a bit of a bitter taste in my mouth, to be quite honest :)
Great work, you should go far!
