Delivering a 14-year old's baby provides a springboard to discuss the state of us and what I'd like to do about it.

It's hard to describe what I listen for in these presentations - I value earnestness above style, intelligence over erudition, evidence of a motivation to help over a desire for approval, and finally - this one may surprise you, entertainment value over altruism - this is a radio competition, after all.

People who see remarkable things, who participate in remarkable events in their working lives and then remark on them make for good radio.

I'm not a judge, I have no idea what the judges are listening for. But your entry had many of the qualities I listen for, and I enjoyed it.

Good luck, and if you have a chance, I would appreciate your comments on my entry, Timing Is - Everything.

*I* think you did extremely well, scripted or not.

Your sincerity and good will really comes through. This made me glad that there are people like you out there.

Well spoken. We all need to be more courteous to each other...and sincere. If only you could get this across to most of the 40 doctors I visited the last three years in search of competence. Instead of finding competence, I found comments like this one from a GYN in response to questions about painful monthly cycles and endometriosis: "Well you're around 50. Wait a few months and it'll all go away. You can wait that long can't you?" Years later, it still hasn't gone away. I think you make a very important point about how the root cause of most injustice and intolerance in the world is often glossed over in favor of the sensational aspects of a particular story. Nothing ever seems to get achieved in fighting the base problems of inequality, poor education, and just plain poorly raised people! I often shake my head and wonder at how people are unable to control their tempers! Can't everybody just behave?! Just be nice? For the nice people?!
A fun listen, with its heart in the right place! Good luck to you!

It's hard to get a good sense of what these radio shows would actualy be like when the demos seem to be prepared anecdotes read aloud. I don't know of any actual radio shows where in the host reads prepared monologues. I wish it were off the cuff.

I agree - these are true stories I've experienced and ideas I use, but I wasn't able to share it exactly the same as when I'm with a patient or friend, and instead I felt compelled to script it. But I guess it shows there's a lot to talk about in these situations that I had to compact my stories. Either way, thanks for the feedback!

Wow. What a great idea for a show, I'd love to hear more about what you want to cover. And, pardon my ignorance, but what is a hospice doctor doing delivering a baby? These and more questions tumble around in my brain...

there is so much I think we could talk about.

You do, of course, realize there was a reason that girl was having a baby at 14, and it had nothing to do with her coochy. I had everything to do with her mother and her father and her friends and teachers and... well too many things to list here.

Of course I want you to listen to me now: I hope you'll get a chance to.

Best of luck,
Steve

No one should, at the end of their days, look back with regret on all that they never did: the beauties they did not see, the music they did not hear, the flavors they did not taste, the aromas they did not inhale, the sensations they did not feel.

I'd have laughed harder if the facts weren't so painfully true: as a society we are very frustrated with ourselves and act out on it, leaving us blind to the big picture of what would be best for all of us.

I donno...truth hurts...and in the right mouth, it can lift us up and bring in light.
