Details on Round One Judging

Submitted by izzi on May 17, 2007 - 12:10pm. ::

There have been lots of questions about the judging process for round one of the Quest. Here are some details:

- ALL of the 1,368 entries will be listened to by a "screen team" that includes PRX staff at least one of the judges.
- That screen team will send a list of entries they rate 4 and higher (using the star system on the site) to the full team of judges.
- We also send a list of top-rated entries based on public voting to the judges, if there are any that didn't already end up on the screen team's list.
- The screen team process is happening this week.
- The full team of judges (myself included) will listen to all the pieces forwarded by the screen team and vote on those.
- Those pieces will then be reviewed and discussed at a face-to-face meeting, and the judges list of 9 semi-finalists will be determined.
- In ADDITION to reviewing the screen team's list, the judges can each bring forward up to two alternates they feel should be considered by the full group.

- While all this is going on, the users of this site (that means you) will be voting for the "people's choice".
- In round 1, the judges pick 9, you pick 1. In future rounds, your role becomes bigger as the pool of semi-finalists gets smaller.

We'll announce the 10 semi-finalists the week of June 4, so double check that your contact info is right.

A few other notes:

- The judges and the screen team are listening to entries and voting based on what we hear. The wonderful (really) promotion you are doing of your entries is something that could impact how site users vote, but it's not part of the judging criteria.

- The judges stopped commenting because we did not want to influence voting (how's that for self-important?). We did not want anyone to think, "well the pros liked it, it must be better (or not) than I think."

- About "winning." True, three people will win the Quest. BUT, know that we are doing everything we can to promote this site and your work to stations, networks and producers as a new source for talent - and not just host talent.

Beyond the three winners, our plan is that the Quest becomes a way for many of you to connect with public radio projects as host, writers, producers, whatever. The public radio system is watching - let's make the most of it. One thing though - be sure to tell them you don't bring coffee.

I hope this helps. Keep the questions coming and good luck.

This is great information Izzi, thank you. I'm also glad to hear (see?) that everyone is being considered for other venues with in the world of public radio as well. I've listened to some incredible entrees and have heard more than a few fantatic writers and producers within the two minute submissions.

I, of course, would want to be considered (in addition to the talk show host!) for a MUSE-COACH position. Love to inspire others and bring out their brilliance! (sorry, couldn't resist the plug....)

Just go to your audio clip page and cut and paste the link. they'll need to register to vote, but I think they can vote right up to June 6th.

...so that's how this is going down. I think it says a lot about public radio that you are considering the full range of entries/entrants for other possible ventures with public radio. Thanks for the clarification and for keeping hope alive!

Thank you, Izzi, for taking the time to explain the process and giving us a sense of what to expect.

What a fun learning experience this has been! I had not idea you were doing so much to help connect us with public radio projects, a great use of this site...

I've had a great time with all of this and it's really recharged my batteries to get back into things I've let lie for about a year now.

I'd like to know more about the connections that will stem from this whole wonderful process.

Izzy or others:

What role, if any, will the bios or answers to the questions, "Why do you think you should be a public radio host," etc. play in the judges' decisions?

Submitted by aikimuse on May 18, 2007 - 1:47am.

Dear Izzy,

I would like to thank you and all involved in this. I have been listening to public radio for years and yet it was only with this contest that I felt empowered to teach myself the skills to create my own radio piece. I've done all sorts of creative stuff, but it was like coming to the door at the end of the hallway after falling down the rabbit hole (before the Matrix made it so hip to talk about) and found the door locked with no key in my pocket. I tuned in and found my key and now I know that no matter what happens in the contest, I feel empowered to do my own audio recordings. I've opened a delicious account and tagged transom.org and atlantic.com. Instead of focusing on film ideas or blog ideas, I find myself thinking about podcasting and starting a myspace account with my own audio recordings. And the community has been incredible. I only found out about this endeavor just late last week and yet I've already encountered so many people.

Perhaps its just a serendipity of events, but I've noticed there have been more opportunities to contribute to public radio lately, from writing "this I believe pieces" to submitting sound clips or setting up an interview for the travelling storytellers booth. This is so inspiring for a creative person. To feel that there are organizations and people out there who are creating opportunities and reaching out, so that public media feels like its really public not just private masquerading as public--that anyone who can hear the broadcast or be asked to donate can also contribute. To me, that's what a communtity is all about. Creating possibilities where we can all play a role and feel empowered.

I really can't thank you and all who've participated--everyone out there--enough. You all inspire me!

Very Best,
Melanie

Are three winners chosen because there are three categories or is it simply the magic number?

I think they picked 3 because 2 was not enough and 4 was too many ;)

Really, it's because the CPB asked for three pilot programs. And the CPB essentially commissioned the contest.

They've said that the categories don't count, and won't pay attention to them when picking finalists or winners. It's just to give an idea of the types of stations that might be interested in the shows.

Call me the answer geek....

Thanks, Izzi. That clarifies things much more than any of the guesses we have been making. I am especially glad that you are also thinking of this in a broader way than "three finalists". The tantalizing prospect of an unknown number of unknown consolation prizes for an unknown number of entrants is not just a sop. That's what this is really about. It will take more than three people to secure a bright future for Public Radio. You have found a wonderful way to identify and access new talent; and given the talent both reason and opportunity to connect and improve. Thank you.
May the coming months continue to be full of delightful surprises for us all.

Hey, Izzy -

I'd like to suggest that, after the 10 semi-finalists are selected and named, you ALSO post a list of 10 or 15 "honorable mentions." I think this group would appreciate knowing if they were close to the top. It's SOME consolation, anyway, right??

Whaddya think, gang?

Love the idea of honorable mentions - gives a few more people warm fuzzies and perhaps the cajones to push on for their dream and not assume missing out on the top ten is a proxy for being told you have no no talent.

Out of so many entrants and only 10 "selectees" it would be lovely to see a list of "honorable mentions."

I disagree, Izzi! I think that telling people you WILL bring coffee is the best way to get the job! My first radio experience was primarily flirting with the amazing host and databasing. And then they paid me to learn how to do some audio engineering on the job. That was SWEET. It made getting into college radio like instant! So I say bring the coffee! And do the free work! Through doing free work, I have gotten my best jobs.
