So when I invent the Stick O Matic, will I have to split profits with the Talent Quest????

it gives you better eye hand coordination...better control of the car in needed situations, such as passing another vehicle or snow and ice or off road driving! plus once you get good enough..you dont nessesarily have to use the clutch...betcha didn't know that?

My bike has an 8-speed internal hub, which is better than a stick, but not automatic. They haven't yet invented an automatic transmission that knows when to shift better than my brain does.

I like Automatic because it's actually better for your health. Doing too many things in your car could lead to a lot of accidents, it's bad enough that we talk on the phone, eat, sing, smoke and/or do make-up (If you're of the female or trans-gendered gender.) in our cars. Automatic is better because Manual transmission would only give us one more thing to keep you occupied in the last possible place where you're mind shouldn't be occupied.

Justin,

Thank you for bringing this up.

OK: it's now past the year 2000. I was promised flying and floating cars. The year 2000 was going to bring us many wonderful things - the show said so.

So, where's my flying Mustang, already?

I know, I know, stick shift is so much cooler and you have more "control" over your vehicle, but I'm a confessed clutch-rider. Have killed many clutches in the past. Luckily, my Toyota Celica (automatic) has great pick up and go---better for me to leave the stick in the car's control!

I love my stautomatic. My Mazda-3 has this jazzy stick, you can drop it into overdrive. I don't think it is actually connected to the motor because my car shifts there way before I do.

But I had to give up my stick shift when I lost the feeling in my legs. Turns out I liked the stick shift to see how fast I could make the turns, not IF I could make the turns.

My first car seat had a wheel I could turn to steer the car from the backseat. Mt Stautomatic is the ADULT version of this.

I even make the shift noises when I use the overdrive. Vaaaaaroooom.

That does sort of exist! The transmission in a Passat is like that, where its basically an automatic, but you can take it into semi-manual and shift going up hills or just if you want more control of the car. No clutch, though. But still a great drive!

A Stautomatic exists....

Having (in the past) had to have transmissions & clutches replaced in separate cars, I cringe of the idea of *both* needing it in 1 vehicle.

It was $1800 to have the tranie rebuilt in the automatic I drive now.

The volkswagon bug in the early 70s had an automatic stick. No clutch, just a stick that you had to do the shifting with.

that public radio host hopefuls are shifty people?

Or perhaps said individuals stick with it?

Maybe hosty people aren't quite so automatic?

Well, it might be that hosty people are able to engage in the clutch?

Or is it that public radio host hopefuls don't mind being involved when it is sticky?

Support for public radio is not automatic. You must stick to it.

Much depends on what one drives. Personally, I have always owned roadsters, land vehicles and classic cars from early Land Rovers to the latest Mercedes SLK, none of which should be driven in automatic. What's the point in having a vehicle with no drivability? Just don't plan a long road trip in a two-seat stick – it can turn into the longest crusade you could ever have imagined, ask Darren Stephens: http://www.publicradioquest.com/node/1835

rich, you beat me to it! My first car was a '69 VW Beetle. My friend had one of the automatic shifter ones... now I have a new Beetle, 6 speed with turbo. look out!
--never thought I'd go for the new beetle, but I'm glad I did, I love it.

...the "stautomatic" does exist. My first car was a VW Kharmann-Ghia convertable. It had a semi-automatic transmission that had to be shifted manually, but had an automatic clutch. As soon as you moved the stick, a solenoid would close and engage the clutch. I drive a "full" manual now.

Ever listen to car talk? Lots of stick drivers every week. The reason for stick, I would guess is because it is cheaper than auto, the mis belief that stick uses less gas and is greener, and because we all enjoy sound, stick shifts sound cooler.

That there are so many more stick drivers here than automatic. Must have something to do with that need for control...or maybe I'm projecting. Me? I think driving stick is sexy (dirty puns aside).

Hmmm. Considering that a HUGE proportion of cars are automatic, this is indeed intruging. Are people telling the truth or just being "aspirational?" "Shift Wannabees?"

I believe that people who drive standards are the best drivers. One reason is that they, generally speaking, can't be driving and on a cell phone and drinking coffee at the same time.

You would think so, but I myself am guilty of shifting and while cell talking/eating/drinking coffee (usually not all at the same time). Fortunately, I live in Portland, where most drivers are too slow or hesitant to hit me.

Julie -

I was just in Seattle for the first time and was amazed at how slow everyone was driving. So, is this a PNW "thing?" Having spent my entire life in the East, we can't wait to speed!
