PEOPLE HERE ARE SO NICE!

I come from a relatively rough and tumble message board where the anonymous nature of the members yields brutal honesty, to put it nicely. (http://phantasytour.com/phish/boards.cgi)

In other words, that message board is the exact opposite of this place. Although we're invisible, we're not anonymous. In fact, we all have motivation to be on our best behavior---like this is a 2+ week job interview. The contrast is refreshing, but it certainly feels temporary.

I'm kind of looking forward to seeing the tone of things here shift as soon as there are 1,348 "losers" putting up posts about the remainder of the contest. NPR Idol, it will be...

. . . and I would expect the good-natured attitude to continue. As someone else noted, people drawn to public radio are often more open minded and considerate of others -- hence the reason so many of us want to host an NPR show.

Yes, there will be, unfortunately, some who will grasp the latter stages of this contest as an opportunity to 'beat up' on those who make it farther along -- expect it, that's the kind of society we live in. But, by and large, I think you will find the civilized discussion here will continue overall. And that reflects well on all of us.

Yeah, well, "The Others" seemed nice, too, until they started stealing babies.

And WHO's going to blow up a bunch of folks with dynamite procured by a mad Frenchwoman? Everybody has a backstory - and when you know it, you have greater empathy. (They've even given Ben a sympathetic angle with his drunken daddy - but he's still a psychopath.) Never thought I'd feel sorry for Sawyer - or even like him as much as I do now.

I do think folks here are much more courteous than pretty much any other messageboard I've seen. It may be partly the desire not to step on toes, but I think it's also the nature of the people that are drawn here (well-spoken, open-minded, considerate) and the fact that we can appreciate the anxieties of putting up those two minutes - the more empathy one feels, the easier it is to abide by that Golden Rule. I also think that the anonymity that prompts a lot of people to be jerks on message boards is mitigated by the fact that each of the entrants has two minutes of themselves floating out there somewhere... that seems to make everything more human. You may be right that there will be a negative shift once the field is whittled down, but I'm hoping people will remain positive and encouraging.

Wow, I've heard of speed dating, but speed gestation?

I am hoping my stuff at least keeps people listening before they return to their amorous activities.

Or did you mean folks are really hooking up based on two minutes? ;0)

YIKES.

A virtual hook-up zone on this site too. This way perhaps more than ten people will "win"...

Silly. I can't imagine that either spitting cheeze-its in a bowl of cereal or blood on a bully's shoes would be conducive to amorous activities. They're talking about the connections people will make through these forums. We've all already got something in common. We're here! (Because we have courage!)

I think the majority of people listen to Public Radio everyday. why would they grip when they can say they lost to the next (insert your favorite host/ess name here). Most peeps will probably talk about it for years at startbucks.

What I want to know in like a year how many relationships, marriages, and babies will be able to trace their begining to a two minute clip in a radio contest!!

Laugh, Giggle, Comment, but most importantly click a few stars!!!!

Of course we're nice. We're public radio people! But seriously, I have been very pleased about the general tone of the comments. Maybe other people share my point of view- if you don't care for it, vote and move on. No need to be rude. That's sooo last week! (I hope that's not why I have so few comments.) I'm waiting for it to turn, but hoping it doesn't. I thought it was going to start yesterday with the WWSSP (What Would Steve Stokes Post) forum, but it stayed light and Steve took it philosophically. All the same, if you get too far out of line, they will boot you. Check out the way old forums. There was trouble with some guy named Woody. He is no longer with us.

After we are bumped off, will we become angels or demons?

But I do think there is a bit of strategy about being nicer than average for internet forums. whereas when people are online elsewhere, they don't really have to care what other people think and can be totally snarky and rude, people have a sort of vested interest in this. I would be concerned if it was just because of over-moderation by an external source, but i think it is mostly self moderation, which is keeping people nice. I do think that people may get less nice when the contest is over.

I am really glad that nobody can see how we have rated each other. THAT could get UGLY!

However, some things that people have said here don't seem particularly nice, but i don't want to screw up my own niceness by talking back so i don't address things i might otherwise address. which isn't exactly me.

but yeah, i mostly comment on things that i like, and just rate and move along on the other things.

Some have dreamy-creamy insides and some are nutty-nougat. So when the nuts start shelling out tid-bits do what I do at the bar that serves peanuts in the shell. Either bite off their heads, step on their shells or blow that pop stand.

Meanwhile, may I say to those of you using the "L" word that the winners only get a SHOT at pitching a show. Where is it written that you can't take your clip to your local NPR station and pitch them, Mmmmmm?

Maybe because I am older than most, or because I did EST and Tony Robbins, but folks you make your own breaks. If you really think that winning this contest will pave your way to Lake Woebegone, think again. They could produce 3 shows and cancel.

And dudes and dudettes, you guys not only have technology at your finger tips, you understand it. I thought an i-pod was something to put my digital camera on so I could look through the viewfinder...yes the camera with the BIG screen to look at.

So may I humbly tell everyone within range of my rant:

THERE ARE NO LOSERS!! You have just pitched your 2 min. piece to 10,000 NPR listeners. If they like it, Podcast that baby. If they don't like it, find out why and reinvent your material (It used to be called editing.)

So let there be NO more talk in this house of the "L" word. If this is American Idle (intended) then let's all get record contracts as mere contestants!

Sally, you are SOOOOOO right on the button!

Some of the entries might not show "hostiness" but do show "commentariness" "reportiness" and "cool ideaness." So follow Sally's advice! Go to transom.org! Think about making "specials" or documentaries available through PRX! Email people who seem to have similar thoughts or themes. Get off of your assets ;-D

I've been having similar thoughts about using this site as a launching pad of sorts. One of my friends suggested turning my piece into a weekly podcast about parenting. I know there are other folks who have submitted with similar ideas...seems like a good match, yeah? It would be if I only knew what the hell he was talking about!!

I seem to have completely missed the boat as far as podcasting goes. As a matter of fact, I think I'm the only person in America who still doesn't own an iPod. So. Any resources, websites, How-Tos, great people to listen to, necessary tools?

Thanks friendly folks,
Hannah

I just wish that podcasting music wasn't so difficult. I get so nervous about the copyrights! The rules are rather unclear to me, but it seems like the safe thing to do is nothing at all when it comes to music. Although, TALKING about music is something that i could do for hours, ha ha!

Real live "terrestrial" radio is certainly the easiest place to explore music AND listen to it. That's the main reason why I think we'll always have radio.

All our minds are wide open to new ideas and possiblities. That is what this contest and this site is designed to do, and it is working. We reward the efforts with honest crticism of the ideas, not the person. As a result I am not afraid to make an ass of myself to millions of people, and I'm having a blast!
