All I need to know I learned from Comics...including how to create a submission for the Public Radio Talent Quest!
From the Ira Glass-Jessica Abel collaboration "Radio," to "Bound by Law," the Fair Use how-to for producing creative work under the Creative Commons licensing (produced by the Duke Center for the Study of the Public Domain), I've been learning like crazy lately from stuff that we were told was just kids stuff. I've learned about how to make my own comics using an ancient east asian style of brush painting from Linda Barry in "100 Demons" to finding a new understanding of Iranian culture from reading Marjane Satrapi's "Persepolis I&II," and many others, I am just astounded by what's out there. Who would have thought that I would read the Glass/Abel book and a few months later be submitting my voice for a national public radio talent search competition?
There's more out there than just Neil Gaman's Sandman or Art Spiegelman's Maus. There are memoirs from such diverse authors--Miriam Katin, Allison Bechdel, Craig Thompson, and Michelle Tea--to how to instructionals and collabortaions by Ellen Forney--to cubist interpretations by Alene Crub. Does anyone else dig this stuff, too or, had similarly experiences?

LOve "understanding comics" and "Creating Comics" both brilliant.
I've been a fan of manga and american comics as a form of literature and its so great to see so many dipping into this pool of storytelling!

I agree. There is a ton of amazing stuff out there in comics! I have not been able to keep up with a lot of the newer stuff since I haven't had a lot of time and money. Mostly money... I've really been meaning to read Marjane's novels. Craig Thompson is awesome. Scott McClouds 'Understanding Comics' has been a big influence on me. I want to read his new one, too. But I also still like the entertainment as well as the more serious and alternative and intelligent stuff. I wish I was rich.
Hey Friends,
I just want to say that I've read all the comics I listed in my intro for free, that's right, free. How? The good old library. I found out that libraries carry all sorts of things including really good comics. I read one and it recommends another, or I go online and google it or look it up on Amazon and see what they recommend. I read the blurb and then check for it at my local library. Most of them even have online lookup features for patrons, and they have inter-library loans for the ones that they don't carry but their sister libraries do. I worked in comics for a summer in high school and literally got paid in comics. I tried to keep up in college, but after my first $300 comic bills for all the back issues, I had neither the time to read nor the cash to stay current and so I quite cold turkey then and there. But now that I've rediscovered my local library, I am literally rolling in comics. And I found out that most libraries accept patron suggestions for new acquisitions. So as more and more graphic novels are being published, the easier it is to get your favorite titles in hard cover to read in the comfort of your own home--and then return them when you're done. Sure beats the hell out of cold turkey!

This is one of my favorite parts of my job as a paralibrarian...I order the comics for the Children and Teen departments, and add my two cents in for the comics for adults. :)
