Supporting local talent

I think participating radio stations should do stories on entries from people who live in their broadcast area. Like mine! http://www.publicradioquest.com/audio/user/1231

Folks at WAMU, are you listening?

Hi Folks,

Once we know who makes it into round two, we'll reach out to their local public radio stations and try to arrange some things - an introduction, and intereview, we'll have see.

If you want to reach out to your local station and let them know what you're doing and about the conversations and ideas on this site, please do. All we ask is you are polite, and respect folks at stations who are super busy.

Here's a question for you - Other than introductions and maybe an interview, how can you imagine working with your local station (whether or not you make it to round 2)?

Thanks and enjoy the rest of the weekend - Izzi

Thanks Izzy for weighting in here.
What I see happening is a know host, hopefully here in the DC area, would have several of the 1,400 +, like 25 or more and do a sorta town hall where we could tell about the process, why each of us decided to enter the quest. After all we are a talented group. Diversity is the buzz word of the 21st Century. The quest fits the bill in this department. We could play our entries give each other needed feedback. Bring the sense of our on-line community to life on the Radio. We have an embracement of riches in the talent world here and this would be a way to get 2 minutes of our 15, even if we don’t go on to round 2. They will, of course, get there 15 minutes of fame. Why not let some of us get our 2. It does boil down to intros and interviews, most radio does. So that’s my idea. I am sure many of you can add to it and improve on it.

As for the volunteering I have worked for several phone pledge drives and I have volunteered to staff the WAMU table for the DC Folk Festival next weekend. Believe me I am doing what I can. I am glad that those of you who have the possibility of using different media to plug your entry are not doing that. It does help keep things fair.

If many of the affiliates did this town hall meeting with questers it could go a long way toward the attention me want. Were press releases sent out about the quest, and if so to whom were they sent? Just wondering.

Well, what do we think? I look forward to your replies.

If you get into the Top 10, chances are your local public radio station will talk to you about it.

I know it's off the radar of our news team. I don't think anybody at our station would have known about PRTQ if I hadn't mentioned it, and the fact that I've entered makes it NOT newsworthy. Our staffers have a thing about NOT promoting ourselves, you know? Even if others are involved, it just seems like bad taste.

Maybe it's a little like Cecilia Bartoli getting international respect but none in Italy....

as there is theoretically prize money involved, and as i could directly benefit from it if chosen, i decided it was inappropriate to mention my entry on the air. a clear conflict of interest. however, myspace is a different story.

If you want to meet Kojo, Diane, or Ed, one way to do it is to volunteer to answer the phones during pledge weeks!

People that think that public radio is a closed world just the ones that haven't volunteered yet. It becomes super open. almost every entity like that is hungry for good volunteers, especially at times like pledge drives.

Yes, I agree that WAMU should do something. It would be fab to get a chance to meet Kojo, wouldn't it?

I dropped a line to the show, so fingers crossed!

Diane Rehm?? I'd be more nervous about meeting her than I was when I met Ace Frehley...and I was shaking when I met him...

Diane and Linda Dano are the two famous people I most want to meet, but are most afraid to because I might sound like a moron. ;)

I think she would put one instantly at ease. I had the good fortune to see her when the Friday News Roundup was broadcasting from the Newseum. I do an interview program for childbirth educators and try to model myself after her.

Is Midwifery legal where you are, Marsha? Is there a big debate over it?

I'm originally from Missouri and it's a huge controversy there...

In Maryland, sure, licensed midwives are legal. But a birthing center in Bethesda, staffed by midwives had to close because of malpractice insurance rates.

Radiogrrl...here I was thinking that your Kiss addiction (is that a good characterization?;-)) was the most mind-blowing "secret" about you. Now you mention that you'd be nervous meeting Linda Dano? Wow. What else ya got? =)

Submitted by radiogrrl on May 29, 2007 - 10:08pm.

Linda Dano is absolutely my FAVORITE soap actress ever. Then, Kim Zimmer, Eileen Fulton, Katherine Kelly Lang, The P&G Lizes (Liz Hubbard and Liz Keifer), and Deirdre Hall (because she was Electra Woman back in the day...).

And, I don't have a KISS addiction. I can stop anytime I want. ;)

All right!!! Now we're talking about substantive issues! Tell me, did Deirdre Hall have a twin sister in real life, or was that only on the soaps? I thought she did, but my memory's getting hazy on that topic. Haven't watched 'em in years, but she and that John dark-haired-detective guy were a hot couple. Did they have a baby? and who did it grow up to be? was that Sammy?

"Deirdre is the twin sister of former actress Andrea Hall, who portrayed the role of Samantha Evans off and on on the serial from 1977 to 1982."
Hey, if you're a soap opera actress and you REALLY have a twin sister, makes sense that they'd bring her on!
I had a college friend who even watched Days in-utero ;-) I get sucked in every once in a while but eventually something so bizarre happens it turns me off.
And people think MUSICALS are unrealistic????

C'mon! What's unrealistic about being kidnapped on an annual basis, coming back from the dead about 6 different times, or marrying 3 to 4 members of the same family? ;)

Oh, sorry. Only CBS does the last one.

They did have a baby: Belle Black. Belle is
having baby daddy drama at the mo with Shawn Brady (who's really a Kiriakis) and her husband Phillip Kiriakis (who is Shawn's uncle).

Sami is Marlena's daughter by Roman Brady. Sami and Eric (not in town now) are twins.

My grandmother watched the NBC 'stories' when I was little. I stayed with her during the day until I entered nursery school. I remember Another World, The Doctors, Days of Our Lives vividly. When I started watching on my own in the 80s, a lot of the actors were still on DAYS and AW from when I was a wee girl.

I actually quit watching DAYS when Austin chose Sami over Carrie (the first time) and then quit NBC entirely when they cancelled AW in 1999. I didn't start watching NBC again until last year, when My Name Is Earl premiered. I quit watching this year when Earl wasn't as funny as it was last season.

Of course, NBC doesn't care what I think because I'm not a Neilsen reporting household. ;)

I couldn't stand that either.

Between 1995-98, I worked with a girl I kept butting heads with. It was often tense in the department. We were both soap freaks though, so we found common ground in the stories. The shows we had in common were B&B, Y&R, and DAYS.

I had a clock radio that got TV bands. So, anytime the storylines ramped up, we'd huddle around my desk so we could work and hear DAYS. :)

...I watched soaps when I was a kid (Luke & Laura anyone?), and I used to watch AW with one of my sisters. Then we got into the nighttime soaps (we used to go CRAZY over Knots Landing!), and that was it. The last soap I watched was Sunset Beach, but that was SO laughable it was no wonder that it got cancelled.

Not to sound all public radio or anything, but now I don't watch any tv (except for Dancing with The Stars- guilty pleasure) if we don't get it from Netflix. We just started watching a show called Wonderfalls last week, and that's pretty good.

Submitted by radiogrrl on May 30, 2007 - 11:19am.

I didn't watch ABC soaps until college, when my friends wouldn't flip over to CBS for me when we hung out. I really got into ABC in 1997, about when I gave up on DAYS and was flipping over to CBS and ABC during commercials and stopped flipping back to DAYS. I think I'm partial to OLTL, but I couldn't swear... I love really great character rivalries and Viki/Dorian is about the best there is.

I never got too into nighttime soaps because, I'm obsessive enough as it is...I'd never sleep if I really got into the PM stories. I will admit to being completely sold on ABC's Ugly Betty. ;)

Deidre's real life twin sister Andrea played her twin on DAYS, in two different storylines.

Back in the Salem Strangler days (I think), Andrea played Marlena's twin sister Samantha (Sami was named after her). From 2000-2001, Andrea played Hattie, who was a Marlena look-alike.

O.K., back to AW...I did love the whole friendship between Felicia and Cass. Why didn't they ever hook up? I thought maybe they'd finally do something towards the end of the show!

Why didn't they ever hook up?

AFAIR, Cass and Felicia came to town as ex-lovers. They figured out they were better together as friends. I'm still waiting for Brooke and Ridge to figure that out on B&B. ;)
