Public Radio Talent Quest Haikus
I love haiku. Love it.
So, I would like to dedicate an entire thread to haiku poetry about the PRTQ.
Please share!

p.s. For the sake of simplification, we'll define a haiku as a poem using three (or fewer) lines of no more than 17 syllables in total. True haiku has a few more rules, but let's not worry about those right now.

Are judges listening now?
I want an update!
I must, I must...
I must increase...
No, wait - that doesn't fit.
Damn.
I wonder if any of the men got that reference...

Judge my hostiness in the PRTQ
Nope, doubt it...
Unless they were the boys that hung out with the girls and played dolly and make-up. Even still, they didn't get us either!
Janean and radiobrat, you all should start a forum about fav Judy Blume book..or fav book from adolescence years.

I read lots of girl books. Okay, and I did have that dress up thing going, too. When I was a school librarian, I had to insist to the girls that it was OK for boys to check out ...it's me, Margaret, too. They'd ask, "Why?" And I'd say, "So they won't be so dumb." Most of what I read is kid lit. I also liked True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle, Catherine, Called Birdie, Ida B, pictures of hollis woods (don't tell anybody, but that book made me cry), A Year Down Yonder, and Lloyd Alexander has a wonderful series of books about an orphan girl genius/adventurer named Vesper Holly. His last book (he died this month) is called The Rope Trick.Check out one of those.

Lakeisha- you might like The Shimmershine Queens by Camille Yarborough. About two girls who learn from one's grandma about "the getup gift" (when life knocks you down, tell yourself- get up!).

Yeah, Jim...
I bought her book Cornrows fro my daughter when she was 4 years old. It is an affirming book.
I bet you are a great teacher, Jim. Is reading/literacy your special focus?

It is quite possible to be highly interested and knowledgeable without being "highly qualified".

Oh, I'd like in on that. "Are you there God? It's me Margaret" (and all of Blume's catalogue, really) was pretty foundational. "Bridge to Tarabithia was another." I (childless) even went to the theater to see the movie. It was no where as good as my memory of the book, but still a pretty good kids' flick. A kid down the street just read "Where the Red Fern Grows," and was SO impressed I'd read it, too. It's fun to talk to kids about books.

Don’t think that having seventeen syllables makes words a haiku.

It falls to the enlightened, and the intelligent and the sane to take responsibility for the deluded or doltish or insane.
As the starter of this thread I specifically said that we'll just use 17 syllables as the definition of a haiku...to make it easy and quck to play along.
Not that I don't appreciate the purists...
But it seems that those in love with contest rules are also in love with the rules of language arts. ;-)
Forgive me my bastard haikus!
