In the interest of all that is fair and just...
Re: Sondra Harris. Nearly Good.
It's been three weeks since Bohus presented proof that this entry was plagiarized, and the "golfwidow" entry is still kicking around. For anybody who was conned into thinking her entry was her own creation, listen to this:
http://www.lordoftheyumyum.com/Flight%20of%20the%20Bumblebee.mp3
Thanks to Bohus for making a clarification. But since he replied only on her entry's comments, it got lost in the site, and people are still commenting on how "original" it is.
I quote:
I am close friends with the actual artist who created this. He's a Chicagoan named Paul Velat, and he performs as "Lord of the Yum Yum". It's brilliant stuff, go to www.lordoftheyumyum.com or a quick search on MySpace will turn you on to more of his staggeringly awesome music. That's my point - it's HIS brilliant stuff. You really need to give credit where credit is due - as of right now people think that you created the music. You don't get to just take someone's hard work and use it as clip art for your entry.
Thanks to Bohus for introducing us to somebody really interesting (I like the Habanera best).
Isn't the point of this thing about the voiceover? The content? Why all the fuss over the background music, which has been apologized for?
Shouldn't we be concentrating on the person doing the broadcast? Isn't that what THIS COMPETITION is all about? And why are you all acting like such nasty, small people? Seriously, be grownups--there's no need to be insulting and rude.
Apparently Golfwidow didn't credit her BACKGROUND music. She apologized to all and sundry for that oversight, including the artist responsible for the background music. I've heard her podcasts, and Golfwidow is very entertaining. Isn't that the focus here? The personality? Come on, people. You should be ashamed of yourselves.
Most people I know wouldn't have the guts to apologize.
I do remember hearing the entry, though, and wondering how I might be able to get those two minutes back.
I just listened again, knowing what it is, and it's great! Huge difference between going in knowing I'm about to listen to a very funny, odd version of "Flight of the Bumblebee" and thinking I'm about to hear someone demonstrating their "hostiness."
I think we've all learned a lesson here - if you're going to plagiarize something in the Public Radio Talent Quest, make sure it's not from a Chicago artist. I mean, what are there, 800 entries from Chicago? C'mon, dummy!
interesting things come up. Try it and see. Obviously she was in many ways a worthwhile person with worthwhile things to say. It's just that in this particular context, something went terribly awry.
What this tells me is that one can never be too careful online in presenting yourself accurately and clearly. IMHO, confusion leads to people behaving badly. If we could all look each other in the eye, we'd understand our intent much better than just reading our words and interpreting what we will.

People should have left the music and F/X out and just concentrated on the purpose of what the Round One rules asked for...voice and personality. But what the heck do I know?

I'm sure you guys all heard this already, but Sondra Harris, aka golfwidow, is gone. Her entry has been removed from the contest.

Good. And, plagiarism issues aside, my personal taste is that it made annoying radio. I kept trying to swat at nonexistant mosquitoes.

Do the judges know? If it was played nationally it is probably one of the ones that will make it.

What's saddest of all is that this was heard across the country - on a featured segment promoting the contest on the April 21st broadcast of Weekend America with host Bill Radke interviewing Jake Shapiro. The piece was publicly credited to golfwidow.
What appears on this website is one thing, but when it's broadcast and falsely credited, that's another. It should be removed from the website completely - that's the only honorable thing to do.

Haven't been on the boards much this week, and just caught on to this. Thanks for clarifying...

It falls to the enlightened, and the intelligent and the sane to take responsibility for the deluded or doltish or insane.
I'm actually glad they left it up...and now that we know who's work it really is,we can enjoy "his" artwork...and perhaps it will pay of for him getting some well deserved exposure in a very unlikely way....so he might sell a few CD's now because of this and everything will work out for the best

Footballwidows are way cooler than golfwidows.
