Judging in Action
It's an exciting time: all of the judges have convened here in Cambridge to begin the process of choosing nine of the ten semi-finalists from Round One.
Well, almost all of the judges. Jake is currently in Seoul, so he joins the meeting like so:

The Public Radio Talent Quest judging team selects nine of the semi-finalists in Round One, and your voting selects the "people's choice" semi-finalist, making ten total semi-finalists.
Remember, public voting ends June 2nd, so keep listening, and stay tuned for the results!
As I stare at my phone, the love we once shared has turned to a cold cold silence. Sure at first there was much love and excitment of ringing and answering (even if not the call by the judges we hoped for)... but we told ourselves "we will keep trying" until we were blessed.. with that beautiful call.
Then the calls started "Hello, this is with such and such bank" or "we're going to be in your area and would like to tune up your A/C". The phone denied it as telemarketers but Mrs. Keeme did not raise a fool (well there was that one time with the the hammer, a double dog dare and a small wager I almost won)... but still!!
*Sigh*
Now we (phone and I) just pass each other.. well I sort of pass it on my way past the dreser... with only silence... no love.. no judges... not even that really mean collections guy.
I miss the fun times... Farewell cruel world..."WAIT! CAN IT BE... IT'S RINGING IT's RINGING!!!!!"
Damn... it was a wrong number... so they say.
Keeme
Mr morning show is nearly done. I have a little time before I start working on the next unpaid work and can no longer fathom sitting by this silent phone. Off to get a cup of chai I can't afford. With whole milk, dammit.
The judges, they think.
They listen to the hopefuls.
Maybe ALL will win!

Glad to be one of the 61 Jims.
There once were some judges in Mass.
Who listened to entries with gas.
They hooked up the 'phones
And rolled out the bones
And picked the Bear head of the class.

... as well as for it's puerile nature and unusual lack of sophistication.
Ooooo! Ooooo! Pick me! Pick me!
I'm sorry. I was so excited by this topic that I used four exclamation points in one paragraph (normally, I abhor the little bastards).
I listened to some of the talk entries and after more than 200 in one day, I'd had enough. So, it's back to work and more listening tonight.
Just a thought ... do the finalists get to live in a fancy house like on America's Next Top Model?

Judge my hostiness in the PRTQ
I'm kind of curious about the voting ending on June 2nd. Does that means the last minute that you can vote must be June 1st at 11:59 P.M., or June 2nd at 11:59 P.M. I just haven't seen any official rule stating what the official cut-off time is.
This kind of information would definitely be very appreciated.
What time and day will the Gang of 10 be announced? :) Will the alternates be announced publicly as well?

My hat is off to you guys. I listened to 140 something entries and it almost killed me! You are better folks than I.
Hang in there!

Oh, the dear, poor judges...
I hope the collective look of ennui on their faces is their attempt to look neutral and nonpartisan -- not a reflection of the tedium of listening to 1451 two-minute host offerings.
Here's the math: 1451x2=48.4 hours of amateur hostiness. Someone order those folks a drink!
Good luck!!
K.S. Haddock
Izzi (hiding from the camera) said that the actual judging was taking place amongst 200 entries which were culled by a search team. The judges could also bring two entries outside of those 200 that they wanted considered. So at most the Judges are hearing 218 entries during this phase....
218 x 2 minutes = 7 hours 16 minutes
Add in debate time and perhaps having to listen to some semi-final semi-finalists twice....
They might get done by Friday ;-)
(Hey Dr H, you're not the only numbers geek!)

Judge my hostiness in the PRTQ
Everyone's been doing a lot of listening, but I'm curious about the writing part. Hostiness, personality, talent, and a nice voice are, of course, incredibly important. But it seems to me that writing is the foundation of a great radio show. So I'm just wondering how the judges are assessing entire entries, which included numerous essay questions, as well as the public profiles, which were also about writing. I saw a lot of "txt msg" writing out there, but that's hard to read on radio.
It seems to me that radio writing and radio hosting are quite different, albeit very important and mutually supportive disciplines. Since the judges are presumably looking for on-air talent, or "hostiness," I've been assuming that excellent writing is not a major criterion for this particular competition.
Perhaps, for some of us, this contest may be the start of another path into public radio. For instance, my burgeoning curiosity moved me to review the "This American Life" website to find out how I can become one of the vast multitude who send stories and ideas their way each week.

Oooh, Cambridge, MA? I wonder if I can go drop off a not-at-all-bribey basket of muffins?
Nah, the words on the board simply make up the agenda for the day. Those lucky fools get all kinds of time for recess! In the meantime...
Feel free to give mine a listen...
The list on the board includes the trademarks of what makes for a hosty personality!!! This way if the judges lose sight of their master plan they can revert to the original guidelines. It's brilliant!!
I can flat-out read the words engaging, curious, personal, authentic-- can't you?? What else does it say?
Looking for answers? After checking out my submission here you can find them on www.prx.org/pieces/18374.
So different laptops but no one seems to be wearing headphones... So are they all listening to each piece at the same time? Or are they listening to each submission privately? I love this photo. And I love the guesses on what's on the board behind (though I'm saddened that my name doesn't even show up in the list even in pig latin. sigh)

Hmmmm....I don't know about this. But hey, they're the experts. They must know what they're doing.

Another limerick which escaped from its proper forum thread. And you thought it was safe to go back into the PRTQ pool....
Those nice tag clouds depicting what we
said we'll bring to Round Two and Round Three?
Use a tag cloud again
to announce the Top Ten.
And all sixty-one Jims will gasp, "Me?"

Unfortunately for all of us, the names on the board are of entrants who have learned a rhyme for the word orange - used in a correct-metered limerick.
That is all.

"Happiness is the best revenge!"
What if what's written on the board are the names of the entries they're seriously considering? Though, judging by the people in the pic, you may well be right, Shelly! Anyone have the software to enlarge and sharpen the whiteboard enough to make it legible?
Not that I put it in Photoshop and upped contrast, sharpened the image or anything... I'd never be that curious.
