How do we know how the vote is going????
As to the one finalist who will be chosen by popular vote: I would presume that it would be based on average rating of those voting, rather than total points. Otherwise, those with referral networks would have an unfair advantage (i.e., you could score 6000 total stars from 3000 mere 2-star votes, as opposed to the great entry that scored "only" 5000 total stars from 1000 5-star votes).
Make sense?

I'd like to know the top 10 (of course) AND the runner-up 10 or 15. My feeling is that it would be a nice consolation to know whether you ALMOST made it.

... no matter how far the list people are.
I keep thinking how sad it is that there are so many ideas and qualified hosts out here in indie land, but almost no funding money. CPB gave out two large grants for this contest, one to PRX and the other to Launch. At least PRX is trying to spread some of the cash. Launch is lunching with celebs. Makes me a little miffed, and REALLY hopeful that a Jane/John Doe gets the final CPB nod. And of course that the show finds homes on public radio stations.

Judge my hostiness in the PRTQ
I believe some results should be made available in the end. The popular vote is just that. The person with the most friends has an advantage.
However, as an entrant, I do want feedback from the judges and the voters. I'd like to know, "Did the screen team grant me four stars and move me on to the next round?" "Did one of the judges select me as an alternate?" I am flattered by the comments people have left me and feel pride in that I entertained strangers to the point they felt strong enough to leave me some feedback. So to would I appreciate a list of those that reached the judges milestones.
From two perspectives. I'm one of those folks that likes to see things play out, with the results shown only at the end (like not knowing if "it's a girl or it's a boy", or a raffle for a new Gibson Firebird (would somebody PLEASE HAVE A RAFFLE for a wonderful Firebird?), etc.).
The second perspective is this: Being judged in a contest is scary-exciting-rush-worrisome-interesting-wonderful-frightening for me. I think I'm happier dreaming about having a shot at this until the day of judgment... There are so very many excellent entries...

I am just curious as to when we will know who is in the Final 10. If you look at the rules, there is a lag of almost a month between the end of Round 1 and the start of Round 2. When will the finalists be announced?

Of course, nit-picky nervous nitwits like me want to know if it'll be first thing in the morning or afternoon ....

Judge my hostiness in the PRTQ
Israel Smith (aka Izzi) posted this talent quest update on the Association of Independents in Radio (AIR) listserv the other day:
"Over 400 people have entered so far, more than 4,500 are registered on the site, and we're approaching 20,000 votes cast."
I am not sure why I feel the need to respond here but...
This is contest. Not a cage match. It may be subjective but the people that put it on have the right to run it anyway they like.
I really like how the voting and the comments are set up. This contest is set up to celebrate talent. It is not about noise or hype.
I know it is common for our culture to exploit failure as much as talent, but I don't think there is really a need to see how poorly someone may be doing.
How many people watch the first few days of American Idol just to watch the people who probably shouldn't have entered the competition?
Since you can't see how many people voted or how the vote is going, it would be nice if there was a counter so you could see how many people listened to your demo.
Hi,
We believe that by showing how many votes and the average rating for an entry that it would bias people in rating each entry. I stand by that decision. Once the contest is underway for a few more days I'll post some stats about the number of total votes, how many people have voted, which states have voted etc. - aggregate stats.
I think it is great that we can't see the ratings. i think it would make us all a lot bitchier in general. I don't necessarily expect to win, but i don't really want to know how good or bad i am doing with regards to 1360 people. I mean, what about that person that is last? who really wants to know that? because this is all subjective anyways, I would rather not know and just have fun commenting.

I agree too. It's a talent contest, not a popularity contest.

Sounds like the judges are key here. As I read the rules, only one contestant gets through on popular votes alone anyway, so it's probably best to let those of us who see themselves as talented and popular keep their illusions. If I don't know how well I'm going, I won't worry about how poorly I'm doing either. That way we'll have two kinds of contentants - the winners and those who JUST MISSED!
Wow I haven't seen this much Brown Nosing since the last election!!! Keep in mind, "The Difference between being a Brown Noser and being an outright Kiss Ass is...Depth Perception ! "...Richard Nixon circa 1971...

At one point in my life, I thought the highest praise I could get was "He's a pain, but he's really talented!" What I forgot was what usually comes next, which is "Screw him anyway!" Now I try to get along. That's not brown-nosing. It's getting a fair shake.
I totally disagree and think you are beyond being way off base here and are bordering on being off of your rocker...The only people that agree with hiding the results are those that are whiney and talent impaired...Come on and show the results!!!!

Hey Woody...I listened to your entry - and trust me...You don't want the results showing, pal.

Denouncing this as trolling would imply an assessment of your intent which I'm not prepared to make.
That said, is "The only people that agree with hiding the results are those that are whiney and talent impaired" really intended to be a reasonable comment on the situation, or are you trying to be inflammatory?
(I incidentally refer you to Claypoole's post about the observed tendency of posted votes to skew results).
Wow, I can tell you read "How to Win Friends and Influence People."

I think the evidence is with you on this one. Some economists actually did a study on the issue, which they wrote about in last week's New York Times Magazine:
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/04/15/magazine/15wwlnidealab.t.html?ref=maga...
In their experiment, a song that ranked in the top five in a blind setup (like this one) had only a 50 percent chance of finishing in the top five of a website where users could see popularity statistics.
This is a reason why more areas (especially the west coast) are moving to mail-in ballots -- so we don't have early polls before the votes are in. Since the '90s, the news media's been pressured to keep quiet on election results until after all of the polls in that state have closed. No offense, but people tend to be sheep.
Really, how would seeing an ongoing tally help the process? All it would do is stroke someone's ego -- or maybe rip an ego to shreds.

If the stats were viewable, I think they might affect some contestants and voters, mostly for the worst.
Other than for curiosity's sake, what would be the purpose of knowing?
This is a great op for all of us. However, the sight/page options could really use some help. I want to know how many votes I'm getting. With that option, people would visit more often I'm sure!
