First, I can't believe I'm writing this. I guess I'm feeling pretty good about making a personal discovery by participating in this contest. As I listened to various audios and read various posted comments, I noticed that now and then I was getting angry or upset or feeling something I didn't want to be feeling. So one night I stayed up until 5am determined to come up with an uplifting belief to submit to "This I Believe." I struggled with the concept of not being able to write about my great accomplishment achieved after overcoming severe hardship--of not having moved from surviving to thriving with a story you'd hear about on Oprah. I'm still in the surviving, trying-to-get-there state. I finally came to realize that to me not having given up on a dream in the face of defeat after defeat is an accomplishment I can be proud of -- even if I haven't yet achieved the dream. I have to tell you, I'm now having a blast with this! The accumulation of talent, wit and insight here is remarkable! We should all get together at the end and have a big wing ding or something.

Glad to be one of the 61 Jims.
That was extremely inspiring doctorblue.
I have had some real setbacks and disappointments the past six months-- it gets you down and you wonder if you even have a right to 'dream' when you're struggling with some of the basic stuff of life. I came to the same conclusion you did recently, and it may be that this contest was a catalyst for that.
The harder the knocks the more determined I am to dream big and to do what I believe is right. It may not always look practical, and it may not seem worthy to some, but I know what is worth my time and energy and what I want to accomplish with my life.
I hope the very best for you!

Keep on rockin' in the free world.
Dear Mr. Izzi,
Thank you for the opportunity to participate in the Radio Voice Pageant. It was certainly strange and curious. And, I must admit I submitted under false circumstances: I didn't break any rules. Rather, I researched CPR and PDX's funding, and discovered Mr. Allison and his Murrow Award along the way. All, of which could be used to make a very persuasive entry after many years of writing, radio, performance, and a few court cases.
But I didn't. I did a little satire, forgetting that NPR listeners are mostly devoid of whimsy. Which is why I agree with Mr. Allison that NPR has gone astray; I have called it National Esoteric Radio for years. And, with Broadband, traditional media is losing audience year after year. Together with the National Endowment for the Arts research department, I've been working on an "e" solution.
That's my passion in 'real life', and why I was in Geneva last week instead of soliciting votes. The Digital Reading Portal is designed to use Search Engines (millions of hits daily) to bring all of the local languages and local literature to the world, each time the person makes a search in his/her language.
Mr. Allison refers to 'giving voice to the voiceless'; every week two languages disappear from the globe. We give them back their language, and the pride in their language. And there is no reason this same project cannot be adapted to VoIP or telephony in regions of the globe where electricity is not yet available. Then, it is still the VOICE which is so important.
And I could go on, which is why I was invited to speak in Geneva. I have included the web site where the Information Communications and Technology section is located. If you click on C3 Draft Summary Report, my project is described.
If you or anyone at PDX is interested in learning more about what we're doing, please call.
salaam al salaam,
Christine

Ah, not just the creatures that are endangered, but the very way communities make meaning to each other. Language as an endangered species means colonization, of course. Fascinating, and important to know about this work. Thank you for this.
