States of the Union
'States of the Union' is a daily 1/2-hour show idea examining the issues, actions and inhabitants of a featured state of the U.S.A. The show is split into a main topic of interest segment (politics, demographics, etc.) and a shorter segment highlighting music and/or a curiosity unique to that state.
Not only is it great radio, it's great HS curriculum. I see spin-offs and royalities!!!
Go for it.

Interesting. I'd like to learn about other states I've never seen (and territories would be nice, too). But, not enough about *you* in that piece.
Good luck, though!

You can learn everything you need to know about my hostiness from my spot: how I would produce a show, my vocal quality and delivery, my quest for knowledge and that I'm a complete NPR-head. Personal info can be easily found on the Talent Quest bio. Which is why, I imagine, they have a space for it.
This spot is just that tack I took...

Phase 2 of the Contest is a Survivor type host off. The winner will be decided by whoever can broadcast the longest without loosing their voice!!!!
Interesting idea - Good luck to you, sir!

That I have absolutely NO IDEA where Guam is. I would love a show just on that topic. Where Is Guam? You could call it "Guam (bayr bayr) Huh (bayr bayr) What Is It Good For?"
Just a thought.

This is well-crafted and thought out, and you sound great! Good luck!
Every time I travel to a new place, that colored shape (known to me simply as a blank but labeled area on the map of the United States) morphs from just another nondescript state (1 out of 50) into an actual living, breathing place with people, music, food, locations, atmospheres, terrain, landscapes, memories, and unique stories.
The only thing I can liken it to is looking at books as a pre-literate child - you can think about what they may contain, but you can't ever know until you acquire literacy and reading skills. You can imagine what places are like, but when you visit, they unfold and open in ways that exceed even the finest of imaginations.
KS, your show I suspect would carry much of the flavor of each state because - even though it's a medium without visuals - you'd be able to capture enough to activate anyone's imagination, and you'd do it through the intimacy of radio.
I also like the title, "States of the Union," because in this era of Red and Blue, we all need to be reminded that we are more united than separated, though the politicians would have us believe otherwise.
It sounds very real as you've submitted it. Like Pinnochio, I hope it can become real.

Oh, Linda...you honor me. Thanks for your very kind and evocative words.

It sounds like you already had the show done. I would have liked to have heard more than the introduction, but there's only so much you can squeeze into two minutes. This audio was very well polished, and very interesting to listen to. Best of luck!
Yeah, it seems it's almost too polished...people keep thinking there's an actual States of the Union show. Sadly, there IS no actual show...yet! Thanks for the props!
cheers

americans definitely don't know enough about geography, so this would be great on npr. good luck to you in the competition!
Good idea. But can you get the Mayor(s) & Governor(s) or other such notables to participate every airing?
MWE
Well, since it's only a show concept, I can't get *anybody* without my future NPR producer pulling some strings and calling in some favors ; ) But let's say it was a weekly segment of All Things Considered or Talk of the Nation, the reputation of those shows would certainly get governors and other state representatives on the horn. Anybody wanting to air their issues I think will readily be interviewed by an NPR show.

Sounded fun to listen to. Your intro had so much in it there is no way this could only be a half hour show.
You have a nice delivery as well.
Good Luck

Cheers!
Thanks, Steve! Actually, this particular segment only deals with Puerto Rico and the debate as to whether it should become a state, a sovereign nation, or remain a territory. I think a 20 minute debate between the principals of these movements would suffice. Then, add the 7 minute "Only In..." segment and BANG! you got your 30-minute show with room for station identification, credits and bookends.

As others have said, this is a great show idea, and I think your delivery is great. You offer a lot of enthusiasm without letting it overwhelm your material. Really nice work. Best of luck!
I would definitely listen to this. I've lived in several states, they are all interesting and worth shining the light on, if only for a 1/2 hour on your show. Wow. Great idea. Is this already on the air? Do you podcast? How can I tune in? ... Really.

Thanks, Elizabeth! 'States of the Union' is not an actual show, just a topic idea that seems timely and under-reported. I'd love to take it to pilot status if I get that far...

Not too get too excited, but after a handful of votes, I gotta say this is the best one yet. Way better than any of the few I've heard. I think this one nails the concept of the contest, at least. Let's see, long-form interview shows; taken. Two hour variety show; taken. One hour show focusing on a different theme each week; taken. Morning and evening news magazines; taken. Thirty minute show focusing on a narrowly defined and pretty interesting topic; not taken! Hope you get somewhere KS.
I've already commented on how I like Mr. Haddock's delivery of his audio offering. But I listened to it again this morning as I voted on more entries and what strikes me now is that it is a great idea for a program. There should be something out there like this, so we can get to know the states of the union. As Americans we know pathetically little about our sister states. Hopefully nobody will steal the idea from him.
I found this entry compelling and extraordinary. Give it a listen, I think it stands a shot at getting to the top.
This Haddock guy is brilliant! Get him on the air NOW! sincerely, a devoted fan

I really like your show idea! I would have to say it's the best talk show that I've heard proposed as of yet. It's timely and educational...but yet, different. Just what we need in the talk category, IMHO. Hopefully I'll see you in the second round!! :)
