The Next Chapter of the Quest

Submitted by izzi on June 3, 2007 - 11:19am. ::

Morning,

I woke up to read a bunch of posts about "Quest withdrawal." While the big rush through round one is over, I want to assure you that we are still in the early going of a rich (and fun) journey.

Later this week, we'll announce the semi-finalists in the Quest. These 10 folks have a lot to live up to - they have to meet your standards for what makes a great host. To do that, they'll need your ears, your comments, your cheers, and your criticism.

And that's just for the 2nd round.

The message boards will stay active and will continue to be a lively place to connect, make friends, and share any and all ideas about how to make public radio more interesting.

We've said it before -- lots of people who work in public radio are watching these conversations. Your words here mean a great deal.

Thanks for taking us this far. Stay tuned - there's more Talent Quest after this newscast.

Some sort of honorary mention. Is that possible?

Izzi's most recent post reads to me as though the decision might not be announced today, but decided today and then announced later in the week...

On a side note, thanks to all who have been including the link to their pieces in their signature lines. I didn't get to listen to everyone's piece, so its nice that I can still click on them to listen (even if I can't vote).

Good luck, all.

Best,
Melanie

I hope that they announce on the home page when selections have been made and that if you haven't been contacted, you haven't been selected. That way, at least we won't be hanging on too long. I should have thought of posting this sooner, but here goes:

I just had the chance to listen to your piece and I have to say it was great, one of the best I heard. You have a very interesting voice and remind me of Bill Bryson in the way you talk about your experiences. Good luck to you.

Like every Monday, I have 40-11 things to get done today for work, and I can't concentrate on any of it!

I'm working in my home office today so of course I have my home phone glued to me, and I keep checking my email and this website every 5 minutes. This wait is very exciting, and maddening!

I've been imagining the "I Made It!" email to my friends announcing that I made the semi's in hopes that there is something to that Law of Attraction/Secret thing everyone has been talking about. :)

Yeah, I'm feeling such anticipation sitting here outside the gates of public radio heaven. I'm doing what others might do, sitting outside the "traditional" gates of heaven. I'm reflecting on all that I have done and not done and what I could have done better and well...I guess what we all need to learn from this is that if we want something we've got to make it happen ourselves no matter what. We shouldn't just wait until we are chosen -- we need to believe in ourselves and our ideas and dreams and realize that "heaven" is within us. Oyyyy, I gave up Catholicism a long time ago, but I sure sound like a holy roller. I can tell I'm anxious now, I can't stop talking!!!!

This is worse than being addicted to coffee. I mean overall you have a one in 162 chance. The odds are good, but hopes are low. By wednesday or thursday I will have drank enough coffee to permentantly weld my liver to my intestines. And the little mail notification icon will still not have lit up ;) Brb need to go get some more coffee.

Wednesday ... the new Monday ... or is it Thursday?

It's almost noon on the east coast.

I'm not being very productive at work. LOL.

I just realized that the pack of cigs just opened is the third. Since 5am. The phone keeps ringing, and it's well-wishers, which is certainly appreciated, but... Hub-unit just phoned and when I heard his voice, he heard me burst into tears. NOT a good day. Tom Petty understands.

You'll pull through... and man that is a lot of smokes. I'm not getting down on you because i smoke a little too, but man, my lungs would implode.

Good luck! If the smokes don't work I recommend a light beer or some anti-anxiety pills. Depending on what would be more appropriate to your situation. I chose the pills today.

I was recently involved in another contest like this...and was disappointed with the lack of specificity as to when and where finalists would be announced. I'm not trying to stir the pot here, but with so many people so desperately interested in the results, it only seems to make sense to clearly state when this is going to happen...rather than just "later this week."

Even something as simple as "we will begin contacting winners on June 4th" would be helpful. And it should be right up there, in full view on the home page. This isn't something anyone should have to dig for....

Best wishes to all. It's been a blast!

Thank you for your blogs, it has helped calm some jitters and nipped the ol' rumor-mill in the bud more than once.

Please let us know how else we can be of help in the future- perhaps blogs to encourage the newbies with tips and production ideas? Fund raising models to try on a local level?

Also, perhaps we can pool together with a list of places/stations to submit ideas or finished pieces that would fit into existing shows?

Thanks for all you and the other judges are doing to make this happen.

...even if they DON'T tell us, I think we'll be able to figure it out. Obviously not "offiically" until the announcement is made--but I just think there will be a different tone on the board tomorrow, and people who don't get a call will be checking in.

I'm assuming the call will come from the east coast, and probably not until after 9 or 10 EST. In the other thread Izzy said that Monday morning they were going to try to start calling and emailing the finalists.

Depending on if they reach them or if they have to wait for people to contact them back, they may have it all done by the end of the day tomorrow or may have to wait a day or two until they get ahold of everyone.

I have no idea if a judge will call, if they will all call on a conference call, or if a PRX rep will, or what.

However, one of the posts from the judges said that if they don't contact you within four days then you lose your opportunity.

They said they will begin contact Monday. Those contacted need to respond AND send back appropriate paperwork/releases or something. I'm sure they want to make sure all their picks are eligible, real, kosher, and interested BEFORE the list is released to the public. Any oops! now would be really embarrassing.

But, this question (in Jim Barfuss's sig) piqued my interest, for sure:

“The Hubble telescope now lets us view the distant past. If we turned it around, could we see into the future?" Seymour B. Moore

The answer is no. Anywhere you look, you ALWAYS see the past.

Analogy: If you turn the crayon around, do you erase crayon marks?

I dunno. Maybe it's not a real question, but it DOES have a real answer.

Here's hoping you and I all move into the next round. Cheers!

Sincerely,
Mark Stewart

So it may not take very long at all.

Cuz that isn't really that high of a number, even with them all going through all of the release stuff, etc, it shouldn't really take more than a day unless someone is totally incommunicado.

Thank you for spending some of your Sunday with us. We need reassuring. But it still sounds like round 2 will not be public until “later this week", so what are we thinking maybe Wednesday? I know you need time to contact everyone, but the people want to know. Please!

Morning,

I'm guessing that we'll announce the challenges for round 2 (there are more than one) either at the same time we announce the semi-finalists, or very shortly after.

Stay tuned later this week.
