Drumroll, Please . . .

Submitted by adrianne on June 4, 2007 - 5:34pm. ::

Actually we can't tell you the ten semi-finalists quite yet. We've almost finished contacting and confirming everyone. So until the grand announcement, here are two lists that may be of some interest to you:

The Top 100 Entries by Popular Vote

Entries Nominated by One or More Judges

Somewhere in these lists are the ten semi-finalists.

At some point soon the judges and the PRX team are also going to post some special mentions and notable entries that did not make either of these lists.

Remember, the contestants who have been notified cannot disclose their identity until we have made the formal announcement, or they risk disqualification. They can't tell their friends. They can't tell their parents. We made a couple exceptions for pets, but that's it. Ten excited people are harboring some very exciting secrets right now.

To various posters: If you can't keep your criticisms constructive, about the people running this contest, I think you should stay off the boards. You wouldn't be whining like this if you were a finalist. So, it only makes YOU look bad, not PRX.

The PRX people have been unusually responsive and sensitive, in my opinion. I'm very surprised at the omission of some terrific entries from the finalist list, but if ANY of us drew up such a list, I guarantee it would surprise and disappoint some other participants.

I've experienced a range of emotions in the past 24 hours, but this I can say with honesty: one of the benefits of not being on either of 'the lists' is that I am not living on the knife-edge of anxiety - will I still be called? will I still be named one of the 15 alternates?

As a cancer survivor, I know this - the state of unknowing is very very difficult to bear. And the longer it drags out, the worse it gets for those who live with uncertainty.

I'm sorry for you if you've made the lists and are sitting here hanging. And I'm sorry that the system the judges and PRTQ staff devised could not provide a final answer for us all more expeditiously. This does not bode well for anyone who participated, potential winners or obvious losers, because it leaves a bad taste in everyone's mouth.

4. Squirt
I did not make either list. I'm as disappointed as anyone. (Well, maybe NOT from the sound of things here.) If I wanted to whine about it, I'd focus my complaints on the screening committees. The judges may never even have heard my entry.
There is one list I know I did make. It's a list of things I must improve to better my chances of success in any future PRTQ, similar event, or other broadcast venture. (The usual things: pacing, focus, editing, intro/outro, production, etc).
I have noticed a number of silly people (some of whom are on both lists) who seem to have been energized by their lack of a phone call into finding some other way to become winners in this Quest. They are collaborating; sharing ideas, information, and technical resources; challenging each other; and launching new projects. Other winners will emerge even as we narrow it down to the final three.
It may seem like they have to take the hard way, but that remains to be seen. I've got a sneaking suspicion those semi-finalists are going to have to work hard for their prize money. (The fine print in the rules says they don't get paid until AFTER they have completed and submitted all their challenges for Round 2.)
There ain't nothing comes free these days. Except school lunch.

And you still make my Most Honorable of Honorable Mentions list.

I'm actually grateful that the PRTQ has been so transparent about the process. Other contests take even longer to announce after the "choosing" date, and no way to say "Here's a couple of lists..." So kudos to PRTQ.

That said... I would love to see Izzi just post a "all winners have been called" sort of thing.

Hi folks,

We are working as quickly as we can on announcing the 10 semi-finalists.

If you were not on the lists at the top of this post, you did not make it - sorry.

Please consider this the beginning of the rest of Talent Quest, not the end. We're counting on you to stay in this, listen, comment, and vote as we move towards the three finalists.

We've been writing all along - how come nobody ever asked you who you want to hear on the radio?

We're still asking, and I hope you'll tell us.

It sucks to not make the list, but you amazed a lot of people for having the guts to try. Thanks for that and stay tuned.

An idea for next year. What if you posted on the blog as soon as all semi-finalists and alternates had been contacted? You wouldn't need to spill any names, but just knowing the phone's not gonna ring would be a help.

They can't release the names until they have the written responses from the 10 chosen, so it probably has nothing to do with these folks who have been working around the clock to find a creative way to let ten folks take a crack at the big time. I think they probably ended up with way more entries than they expected, and many more of a high quality making the judging much harder. The calls to the top ten went out on June 4th, apparently, as promised, so I'm not sure what your beef is.

Waivers to be signed, legalese to be translated, etc. I'm sure everything is taking much longer than they anticipated when they announced this thing. Just think of all the entries that were added after the 5/16 deadline because of site glitches.

I mostly agree with, and admire, those sane people who are maintaining some perspective on the contest and the complexities of notifying semifinalists. As Elizabeth Venable (I think) said numerous times, the odds have always been very small that any of us would make it, and so we should all have been expecting--or expecting to be able to deal with--a negative result. But the one glitch, I think, is that apparently the judges have been delaying calls so that they could all be on the line for each call. I'm not sure I see why that's necessary, and it does add to the delay. I had just assumed they'd divvy up the list, one semifinalist per judge, and that would be that.

Still, as others have said, the judges have been merciful to most of us in releasing those lists, since they enable the great majority of contestants to get off the hook and away from the phone, and to start living normal lives again. And they've been remarkably transparent about most of the process. I hate to think that their transparency will come back to bite them--if we didn't know the tabulation method, people wouldn't be able to disagree with it so vehemently, for example.

Another great thing about those lists--we've all now got the chance to listen to a lot of pieces that the judges really liked, and to get a sense in that way of how these highly experienced radio types listen. I'm *extremely* grateful for that.

Um... you said in the past that we in the community have inspired people, and now you say we've impressed people. Would you please invite those people to drop us a line saying how it is that they were inspired, and how they were impressed.

I know I would appreciate knowing if I have inspired anyone, and I certainly would like to know if I impressed anyone.

From the numbers we are pretty much all agreed that there were way more deserving people here than were afforded a spot in the 10 moving to round 2.

Often it has been the case that it is more than just the American Idol who is approached with offers to cut a CD or to go on tour. Is the AI parallel going to hold out for the PRTQ castaway 1441?

Just some questions that I am sure others have in mind.

Judges comments on select pieces are coming. We asked the full judging team to keep notes on what they heard, and will be figuring out shortly how to best share those comments.

Thanks, Izzi!

I was hoping for some sort of 'exit interview' notes or something, because I figured they'd have made notes on the entries.

I would love to know what I could have done better to be one of The Ten or The Alternates.

I'm still presuming I'm not, since I haven't gotten a phone call but no one has said ALL the calls have been made.

Especially the ten who are keeping an exciting secret at the moment, but also to all of those who had two or more votes from the judges. That alone is a great vote of confidence.

Best of luck to all in the next round and those who are going to pursue a radio career regardless.

An update would be nice.

Congratulations to all of those of you made the top 100 on either list. And, since you winners already know who you are, a hearty congraulations to you ten.

Adrianne, I hope you'll fill us in soon on when to expect to see the final list.

I don't know if this will just create false hope in people, or just confusion but for what it's worth, I was on BOTH lists and I still haven't heard anything; either via phone or email.

I'm considering it over just to move on. This has been a wonderful, very powerful experience, and every one of my posters got a thank you note.

I guess this means I'm a pro, just not ready for the big leagues.

I have to say, the way they have been handling this is, well, to be frank, totally unprofessional and almost cruel. We held up our part of the bargain, got our entries in by the deadline. So what's the deal PRX? Step up to the plate here and give people the information that they deserve. You told people June 4th was the announcement and it has come and gone. We assume we're out because we haven't gotten a phone call. But that's not the way to handle it. You should have the decency to give some official word to all of us who have put our hearts and our time into this competition. To paraphrase from the wonderful television show "Putting on the hits", For originality, a 10, for appearance, a 10, for lip sync, a 4. Unclassy.

This is really ridiculous conduct on the part of the judges. This teaser entry...and then nothing. Reminds me of the harrowing interview process I went through at a community radio station that didn't end up hiring me. I was expected to cheerily serve out my term as interim while they dragged their heels on the hiring process. They held the second interview off-site and wouldn't let me tell anyone about it, even my mother. Un-pro-fessional.

There is no reason that the moderators shouldn't have an ongoing, frequently updated thread (maybe twice a day) that let's people know what's up...even if it's nothing more than "Nothing new. We are still working on this."

Rumors run rampant when information isn't disseminated clearly. It's the golden rule of crisis communications...and should be here, too.

Or maybe I'm just a sore loser :-)

Thanks so much for dropping us a line. I understand this process is going to take a while. However, I am still curious about the alternates. When were (are) they going to be contacted? Will they be announced as well? I read in the rules that they could be contacted until ... was it June 30th? And that they had 48 hours to respond. Is it reasonable to think that the alternates don't know who they are yet? Also, when will the honorable mentions, etc. be unveiled? A curious mind here, wanting to know.
