Scorn or embrace?

Okay, my name wasn't on either of the two Top lists, so I figured my NEW quest would be to dedicate myself to listening with respect and homage to the ones that did make it, pick up tips, analyze their hostiness, etc. (Quite a few were my personal favorites too, so I am so happy to see them on the lists)

What about you out there---do you intend to scorn or embrace? If you want to do work with NPR after this, do you think it's smart to research the competition? Tell me what you think!

Can ya really coin a word, make it a major ingredient and then judge someone on it? Apparently so.

This reminds me of grant writing. Unless you know someone at the foundation who was at the meeting where they talked about what they want to see in a proposal, you are fresh outta luck unless your name is Clair Voyant.

It's also like writing a book proposal. First you tell them all the books just like yours. Then you tell them why yours is really one of those types. Then finally you plead a huge case for why your's will stand out in a crowd.

Life is mumbo-jumbo, guessing games and everybody is making it up as they go. REALLY!

Nobody knows what's gonna be hot next...so, hold onto your vision and your comments (and support from each other)and make it happen.

And though I am loathe to quote Larry the Cable Guy...

"GET 'ER DONE!"

It's hard to give fair grades to so many kids. I'm glad the class got a lot smaller. It will be easier to focus on particular things.
I am glad to see some of my personal picks on the lists. And I don't see any weren't pretty good. I'll be interested to see how they all can stretch when they get to take another shot at it. Have we already seen the best that they've got, or is it just the tip of the iceberg. I'm voting for the icebergs.
Icebergs are hosty.

I feel the same as you have often expressed: Passenger or driver, either way the ride is fun! I also agree re: the smaller class enabling more judicious examination. I am greatly anticipating the really cool shows that will come from all of this. And, I have already been asked to be on some programs because of my participation here and that makes me a winner no matter what! I have caught the fever. :-)
No actual scorn was felt or requested...

I'm not sure what I want to do with this experience right now.

I'll definitely keep following the Quest.

I need to really think about what I want to do now in order to use what learned.

You know, I've found it difficult to keep up with all of the posts and pieces over the last few weeks. I finally just had to log out and focus on regular life stuff. There's a bit of relief now in knowing that I can just sit back and enjoy the work of ten instead of trying to keep up with a thousand. I'm really interested to hear what these folks come up with! There were some great ideas, sounds, pieces, thoughts, in the first round, so it'll be fun to see what develops. As for my future radio-ness, I'm interested in exploring the whole idea of podcasting. It's a world I really didn't know existed and it seems like it might be a great vehicle for experimenting and working with audio.
Congratulations to the folks who get to move onto the next round. I'll definitely be rooting for you!

to those of you who made the lists, this must make you feel good, and I'm looking forward to learning who are the 10 winners and following them into round II.

Especially because they might have the contest again. The judge's picks would probably be more illuminating than the pubic vote.

If you were to plan to enter the contest again you (and the rest of us) would know more what they were thinking when they selected people.

Now, back to the thesis.

I think the smart thing to do would be to stay true to yourself and not try to figure out what pleases others.

But as a loser, I have to tell myself that or I'll GO COMPLETELY MAD : )

My original thought was not to copy others in observing them, but taking the wealth of talent here and finding a cool new idea that I can incorporate into my own unique approach. I am constantly surprised by the wide range of what other people like. It's more about additional stimulation and creative raw material, which for me is about pleasing me, not others.

But, like you, maybe that's what I tell myself...haha!

(And NO I did not get a call today. And I don't lie. Usually.)

Yeah, it's a good thing to listen to what the judges picked. There are probably some common threads in there.

On the other hand, you DO have to stay true to yourself. One approach is to listen to yourself from a different perspective, seeing what parts of your style synch up with those common threads in the judges' picks. In other words, find your style's strengths and go with them. The stuff at Transom.org is also helpful here.

As for me... I'm still sticking with the Curse of the Rubber Duckie theory.

It was a long shot shooting blindfolded. At the end the goal of 3 new people will be picked and hopefully 1 will make a show that I will listen to,
