Transom would have nothing to do with this piece. And so, obviously, I thought I would showcase it here. I hope this will be the start of several second-stringers showcasing their work amidst the forums. Unconstructive criticism is appreciated:

This was a quick edit of a friend of mine who coaches football at our local high school. And when you're on the gridiron, not everything's as simple as X's and O's.

P.S. I'm not really trying to get this picked up. Just hoping you all can have a quick, cheap laugh at the expense of a fragile high school freshman.

I know all too well the perils which may come with a name. It's funny, but I can easily see why Transom would decline. Edit out the snickers, replace them with expressions of embarrassment or regret, and it may fall on more sympathetic ears.
The story needs to be told at his expense, not the boy's.

Another caveat for those submitting to Transom: the turnaround on Transom feedback is 2-3 months, often. This was done 2 years ago and by the time I got a response, I was like, "Yeah, this is a bit rough. How did I not hear that??"

My only criticism is the music. The horns were nice, but the music overall sounded like it had digital artifacts...or fuzz... or as if the piece was encoded at a low sample rate.

Other than that - I thought it was strong.

Yeah, ripped for a podcast, so not cd/radio quality. Probably 96/64 kbps. Well, maybe AM radio quality. ;)

Totally charming. And I dug the music, too. Perhaps took a little too long with it at times, but not enough to make it not the very enjoyable thing that it is.

Agreed, a bit slapsticky, as well. I had not honed my subtlety chops at this point. Obviously.

Subtlety chops are a tough thing. How do you know if you've honed them? The difference is so subtle.

The punctuation provided by the horn section is a great touch.

Well it got a laugh out of me. :) I like your friend's voice. It sounds just like what a freshman football coach would sound like.

... what he was. Ahhh, a stolen moment in time. Homophobia never sounded so funny.

Is a name that sounds like an unfortunate innuendo like Hugh Peniston, Rick Head, Ophelia Dickens, and Dick Van Dyke homophobic as well?
