Maxie Jackson is currently the Senior Director of Program Development for WNYC, home of shows such as "Radio Lab", "Studio 360", "The Leonard Lopate Show" and "On the Media".

What do you want to change about the sound of public radio?

Maxie Jackson: I want public radio stations to sound more like the communities they serve - reflecting the demographic and psychographic characteristics of their broadcast footprint. I want our national programmers/programs to challenge our audience's perception of local and public radio community. In short - we must become inclusive in our presentation.

What do you want to change about the audience of public radio?

MJ: I spend all of my professional resources promoting the notion of "inclusion". I hope to challenge the tastes of our public radio audience so that we can provide them with a broader intellectual and emotional experience.

What was the most difficult thing about judging the entries and choosing your final recommendations?

MJ: A good problem was the sheer volume of entries. I was amazed and overjoyed by the overwhelming response the contest has garnered. The most difficult thing was pairing my list down to a top 10 - there must have been 30 or more entries I absolutely loved.

What made you want to be a Talent Quest judge?

MJ: I have a deep respect for PRX and an absolute love for the "potential" of our industry. As a result, It was an honor and my duty to contribute to an effort to determine "next".

I long for the day when we don't need to fight for 'inclusion', when everyone is included simply because they're part of the mix in the broad spectrum of things. Ah, but I'm such a dreamer. I see unfortunate reminders every day we're not even close to being there. Keep up the good fight.
