Life is the number one wonder. Hey, we wouldn't even get to consider the other wonders if we weren't here with working senses and brains.

But if we're talking man-made wonders, I'd like to nominate the system of roads, highways and bridges that knit any country together physically. The first time I saw this from the air as a young adult, I was staggered at its size and complexity, and its sheer, good-natured servicability. And it's still a work in progress.

Of course, there is also the internet, which is doing for movement of thought what the highway system does for movement of bodies. Brilliant.

The Internet. Obvious, and true.

Everything listed is just engineering accomplishments and not a real Wonder. If I were to list wonders, no. 1 would be getting off this rock and establishing a presence (although quite minor) in space. No. 2 would be the Internet and WWW (thanks Al.)
