Announcement: The Round Three Semifinalists!

Submitted by admin on July 11, 2007 - 1:57pm. ::

From 1452 to 10, and from 10 to 7. You guys have never made this process easy.

The seven new semifinalists, proceeding to Round Three, are (in alphabetical order):

All ten finalists did a remarkable job with the tough challenges of Round Two. Rebecca won the popular vote, and after our judges listened hard and deliberated and discussed they made the tough call to say goodbye to Bee, Carrie and Komal. It's only goodbye for now, because we all believe that these three are tremendously talented and will continue pursuing their radio dreams with great success.

We'll be announcing the Round 3 challenges in the next couple of days, so stay tuned for more excitement and intrigue as we get closer to selecting the final three winners who will each create a pilot show for public radio.

Congratulations to the contestants, and a big thank you to the thousands of voters and commenters who are helping us find the next public radio stars!

I'm very happy for those who have moved forward. Once again, I could not have picked ANY to vote off the Island completely...

I'll miss the three, but I'll listen to the seven.

Good luck everyone!

I didn't find enough time to vote for everyone, but congrats on the ones who've advanced.

Did I miss the details about how the judging is done for all but the first round of competition, or is it the same all the way through? If it's going to be the same, then can we just expect that Rebecca will always advance because she will always win the popular vote with her legions of fans, friends and family? Not that it's a bad thing, I'm just curious as to why only *one* person advances based on popular vote. It seems to just set up for that same person to always advance.

because he doesnt see any problem whatsoever in advancement that way, because according to him and I quote"its just "one" spot. pbsstt....glad more of you see what I and others see. I've posted about a gabillion posts on this very same subject...as long as a persons "11 pointer" fan keeps coming back and voting, that one particular person will keep on and keep on advancing to the next round and "perhaps" eleminating another contestant who would me more worthy and have more talent and potential...but what can you do??

If you're going to quote me, don't obliterate almost 100% of my context and don't ignore my several points. I'm being a lot more nuanced than you allow for in your silly ridicule of my position.

And if your analysis were correct, it would have to be Tattoo Todd in the finals, right?

Having a vox pop vote was a PRX idea, not mine. As I said - it's not that I don't see your POV. It's that your solution isn't much better than what's going on already. At least I tried to be gracious about your suggestion.

Finally - can't we just agree to disagree? All voting systems have problems. I'm not alone in left field, either: For one thing, I'm apparently in agreement with the PRX team.

the apperant rant that most people are having here lately is that NPR isnt really looking for a "fresh" sound more than they are a "familure" NPR sound...with that in mind it gives good insight as to why tattoo todd didnt make it because he didnt fit the mold. but Rebecca on the other hand does...and with her fan base, she may keep advancing for that reason and that reason alone. and other people are now seeing that and are getting a little frustrated about it.and I actually AGREE with most all of your points, and yes the voting process is skeewed and not much anyone can do to fix or change it at this point, but most people just want awarness out that hey, a strong fan base can promote you to the next round[again and again] regardless of talent...because all of the finalist have right much talent, so being the less talented doesnt show a lack of talent. but is that type of advancement truly fair?? thats what the fuss is all about.

Enough of this. First off, NPR isn't the only one selecting. It's a collective effort between all public radio between NPR, PRI, CPB, PRX, and APM. You can say they're similiar, but each one has a different opinion of each of the contestants. Also, let us agree about the voting process and how it can be improved.

Also, the judges are aware of this and they are looking over the comments and the votes from the earlier comments they made. Remember, it's still a long way and as I see it, the right top 7 advance (some might debate the bottom but that's okay). Also, if you want to change public radio, send your comments to the CPB, who will make the ultimate decision after the three are chosen from this contest. All this is opportunity. Everyone is a winner. No one here is proclaiming a better show or better talent than the other. Let the chips fall and see how it goes.

Congratulations!

I hold hope Round 3 will give you an opportunity to shimmer. Standardized testing has its place, but I'm ready to discover more about what you can do that's out of chartered waters and, if we're lucky, off the charts entirely. Best wishes.

Whether or not I agree with who was eliminated, and I certainly do not; congratulations are in order for the seven who remain. So...congratulations and all the best in the next round.

I see the pool has been reduced to the folks that sound the most like what is already on offer on Public Radio, and Chuck. I was really a fan of the quality of Komal's voice (Anglophile that I am), and Bee was a breath of fresh air, waiting to be given a great star vehicle. But I see that whatever hopes I had at the beginning of this contest that it might represent some kind of sea change in the state of Public Radio were clearly quite misguided.
Well, all I can say is, good luck with the pledge drives of the future. When we can all get everything on podcast, to say nothing of far edgier material in general, why would we pay for it except out of a sense of civic duty? The trouble is, that civic duty muscle doesn't really come into play for people until their mid-20s, and who knows what the generation raised with free podcast expectations will think of pledge drives at all! Forward thinking would be the key, folks.
Well, good luck to Rebecca, and to Glynn, and certainly to Chuck for being so out there and different, but I would assume the safe money would be on whoever sounds the most like what you already think of when you think Public Radio.
Same as it ever was, same as it ever was.

come back and see us in the next round, OK?

Some of my faves didn't make it either, but maybe you should allow for the possibility of being surprised.

Ira Glass worked at NPR for twenty years before he broke out with This American Life. All those years....how many people wrote him off as "more of the same"?

now were ready to see what you can really do in round 3! waiting on pins and needles!

Congratulations to all of you talented finalists. I'm a big fan! Can't wait to hear what you'll say next.

PS I'll miss you Carrie, Komal and Bee. Please stick around and chat with us. At least pull up to the bar once or twice over the remaining weeks.

I'm completely blown away. I knew I'd be shocked no matter who was cut, but there I go anyway, all shocked. Now it's a combination of total excitement and lingering sadness that we have to move on without Bee, Komal, and Carrie. All three of you did so well, and I can't wait to see what you move onto next! Mega e-hugs.

Color me floored!

Ladies, we are humbled to have served with you.

Hey people, are there some program directors out there that will show some love for these three? Komal and Bee are already on the air. There is no reason why their shows couldn't move in some other markets. And Carrie's a talk show waiting to happen. I truly thought she wiped the floor with us on the word association.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to vote. We promise higher-level hijinks for Round 3?

Submitted by TracyT37 on July 11, 2007 - 2:47pm.

Can't wait what's the next challenge is. It's like one of those obstacle shows Japan always exported to us. Congrats to the remaining 7 and congrats to Komal, Carrie, and Bee of making this far.

Everyone is asking, "What will they come up with next?" I can't wait to see it...er, I mean hear it.
Good effort Komal, Bee, and Carrie. Thanks for putting it out there.
