Showing absolutely no respect for one of our most faithful audiences, Vietnam veterans, I am stealing the title and concept of Tim O'Brien's "The Things They Carried."

Here, in "The Things They Buried," I reveal unto you what is unearthed in my office, finally, during vacation. once given the chance to organize my office.

...

THE THINGS THEY BURIED

under stapler, review copies of books ...

under a tape dispenser, postcards promoting the new dave zirin book ...

new taller speakers out of position on a coAster and notebook ...

under dust a gordian knot of electircal chords.

sunglasses, wallet, keys, remotes, covering notes jotted down on everything from corner store receipts, to lottery tickets to promotional letters from publishers

lottery tickets everywhere

under a reagan ranch calendar a listener stole for me - my backpack I use for carrying stuff to the station on the morning of the show - empty on tuesday

new shoes right off the loading dock on top of stacks of the local crappy weekly - and the weekly US version of the british guardian

a stack of unused british beer bottle caps

change everywhere

one interwoven mass of a tshirt, backscratcher, sock and beer can

a box filled with gifts from an online listner in denver - we're in chicago - that includes a schematic of the shadow government of the united states (hint: just under the white house is an elevator chamber that leads to a
decompression chamber that quickly points to an insane jesus looking paranoid billionaire) as well as a hypodermic needle looking pen, some cute dolls, star stickers, the bill of rights, a bible coloring book and

a piggy bank can with a very leave it to beaver knit sweatered boy, crew cut, in plaid pants, readying to throw a football - that says "I'm savin' up for some good weed!" on it.

... on old harpers and rundowns ...

a square metal gift box from seattle's best filled with pipe cleaners, dental tools, nut shell picks, pieces of canister and envelopes of all sorts, on top of an april 1941 copy of true confessions on top of a manila envelope with a still from the george reeves double feature in the pines - i have no idea what that means either but that's how the
picture is marked on the back - and no, it's not the superman george reeves

I feel like I've actually visited you. I laughed out loud, and enjoyed reading this very much. It's how most of my clients (and friends and family and myself, I might add) live.
