We recorded two sessions of phone calls throughout the run of the Talent Quest: the first calls, to the 10 semifinalists, and the final calls, to the 3 winners.

The first calls involved the entire PRX staff, hooting and hollering on one end, while the finalists hooted and hollered on the other. It was very exciting. But then to our dismay, I realized halfway through that it was necessary to press the "record" button on the mic.

"Aw geez" everyone chorused.

Lesson learned. Recording the second time around was much more successful.

So without further ado, how would you react if you were told you had just won 10,000 dollars, the chance to host your own national show, a trip to Minneapolis, and the Public Radio Talent Quest?

Having been raised in Connecticut - I'm prone to the typical "staid New Englander" style reaction when it comes to exciting events like winning stuff.

Whereas my Texan wife and our children seem to jump about shouting "woo hoo", "yeahaa" and "whoopie" at the slightest positive deviation in the usual course of the day... my emotional outbursts are typically limited to a smile or a suitably understated 'hmmm, you sure don't see that everyday'.

I suspect any reaction recorded from me would have been similarly anti-climactic.

Maybe that's why I don't win more stuff..

that any musing about my potential reaction at this point would be speculative hindsight, but I am sure I would have been calm, collected, and given you something like, "That's nice. You have vindicated yourselves well."
NOT! I'd have screamed and yelled like anybody else, then had a heart attack and dropped dead. Good thing you picked somebody else. That would have been a silly outcome for us all.
