Record and edit using Audacity (good on all platforms & free to boot)
I've been using Audacity for recording & editing a podcast for about 3 months and I have found that it is both flexible and very easy for anyone new to audio recording. It's also complex enough to handle multiple microphones and mixing boards if you're looking for all the bells & whistles.
Not only that, but Audacity is available for Mac, Windows & Linux/Unix, for free.
Download the software here:
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/
And all the help/support documents are located here for download:
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/help/documentation
They even have tutorials to get you started:

Happy recording :)
Thanks, this post was very helpful.
I was able to download, install, finish the tutorial, and record my own voice samples in 1 hour.
If anyone else is just finding out about the contest, I recommend this for those of you who are comfortable with computers as it does assume a certain basic level of computer literacy.
I also decided to pick up a USB microphone (Logitech USB Desktop microphone). I've gotten up and running in just a few hours and things sound great.
Yeah, that's what I use too - it really stands out from the pack in terms of free audio software. Thanks for the rec, 3countylaugh -

I like Audacity as well, but after I lost a long, fully-edited podcast to a nasty crash, I decided to look elsewhere. I now use Amadeus Pro, which is only about 40 bucks.
