Striking Black Gold in New York City

Submitted by angrygeisha on April 19, 2007 - 10:28pm. ::

Generally I am not a big coffee drinker because the java has eluded me in the Big Apple. Why is it that I can’t find a cup of coffee in New York City that Juan Valdez would be proud of? That perfect brew, that soul satisfying first sip... This 2 minute sample is the introduction to my quest...

I was unfortunately in a drug rehab in New York once, because it was a distressing time I can’t remember the exact address, was somewhere on the south side but what I do remember is the really good coffee place next door! :) It was a café, but the coffee was so delicious you could eat it.

Quite the literary rendition of your quest. I wonder if you wrote it in verse or prose? It could certainly be verse.

So what's the show? Maybe just commentaries on New York, Seattle, and every other big city?

Not to belittle the voice - I wouldn't DREAM of belittling THAT voice - oh, yeah, you've got a great pipes and you use them masterfully. It's just that the writing is so darn good. Stands out.

Great Eartha Kitt purr & growl to your voice, AngryGeisha. And a well-written tale. The imagery was *so* rich I had a hard time grasping it all. Shorter sentences help listener digestion. And Steve: I *did* manage to catch "kiddie cocaine"--i.e., sugar.

Unlike some of you I am addicted to coffee and smoking, I can't seem to separate the two of them. The truth is that I am starting to feel the side effects in my bones and I should stop this stupid habit... I guess I am gonna need some need from a
drug rehab for this...

Even as a tea drinker, I dug your piece. You can hear the caffeine desperation in your voice.

Maybe New York isn't where you should be? A friend of mine just got back from traveling in Southeast Asia, and she told me a secret--the best coffee she ever had was in Vietnam. She guessed it had something to do with the French influence--but even then she leaned over and said, "But it's even better than French coffee in France."

Not sure where you live, but if you really are looking for good coffee check out Joe at 141 Waverly Place in the Village. They've got three locations in lower Manhattan.

AG,

You grabbed me, and I am as hooked on you as... as a coffee fiend is on coffee.

But what is kitty cocaine? And really, I feel for your clammy deflated bosom.

And is NYC such a wretched place as do not have place to get a decent cup of joe on every corner? Maybe that's why they say if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere.

What can I say that hasn't already been said? You truly have an amazing voice and talent for delivery on radio. If I heard that voice on NPR, I would instantly be transported to the story your telling. You clearly have the skills.

Seductive entry, angrygeisha! I really feel your passion, desperation and want to find out if you have found your cup of Black Gold. Although, I think it will be a life long quest for you as I can hear in your voice that you may never be satistfied. Great writing, fabulous voice and delivery! You should be in the top selection. I would love to hear more "quest" stories.

I'm not really a coffee drinker either, but your entry was as powerful as a double espresso - jolting me awake at 1:22 am. You're a gifted visual writer, your delivery is smooth yet honest, and you're the first woman I've heard who has that elusive 'wow' factor. (I must confess...I may be biased as I'm also Asian-American, and I could hear it in your voice - interesting ID aside.) If you're not one of the top seven in Round One, then you'll REALLY have something to be angry about - and I will too.
