'Duck Hunting' for the Truth

Submitted by David Alaska on April 21, 2007 - 7:09pm. ::

Sample commentary from my idea for a weekly show called "Globservations". It's a new genre I'm trying to create: basically cute/insightful commentary on pop-culture,aimed toward a younger audience.

The show would be in the All Things Considered format...2-ways,commentary, packages, etc.

Fun topic. Well produced. Quirky voice.

Hey now, don't you be getting down on Duck Hunt, that game gave me months of solid excitement! Personally, I'll still take the 8-bit Nintendo for sheer fun over most of the new video game things out today. You can keep your first-person shooter, just give me a nice chunky side-scrolling bop 'em game and I'm a Cheshire cat.
This was nicely put together, loved the use of the original sounds!
Good luck to you. Try mine?

I remember rockin' out on Duck Hunt as a little tyke. My great grandfather was a totaly G at that game. He would play two duck mode and would stand as far as the chord would let him. The most impressive part was that he would shoot from the hip and still slay countless digital fowl. I'm a big Nintendo fan boy, so you totally hit a good spot with me, sir. Can't wait to hear more!

Good luck, sir.

(Geezer alert.)
I don't remember ANY video games from when I was a kid. TV was the hot new technology. Nintendo came along when I was in graduate school, if I remember correctly. I had a moustache AND big glasses.

The editing and music/sound effects blending was -superb-! I am positively green with envy over the sheer -professionalism- of the entry. Wow! >;o

If I remember my game trivia, there was a show that documented the 'evolution' of console games, and 'Duck Hunt' was one of games illustrated.
Supposedly, how the 'zapper' worked was that the gun had a 'black-white' photo sensor in it, much like a video camera. When the trigger was pulled, the game would cause a 'back flash', inverting the screen to all black, -except- for a white square where the duck was on-screen. The photo sensor in the gun would register the white square, and if it was within a "central region" of the photo sensor, the gun would indicate a "hit", which the game would play the appropriate screen sequences for. The 'back flash' was only for a brief nano-second or more, but not enough for our eye's 'Persistence of Vision' to register anything more than a quick 'blip' on the TV screen when the trigger was pulled...

Darn... Now that I have written this, maybe I should update Wikipedia entry for 'Duck Hunt'...

Sorry, I wax loquacious sometimes... >:")

It's a scathing political ad targeting one of my siblings in an imaginary election.

I think we all learned a lesson.

Gosh, I never thought about it... how DID that old gun work? David, you have gobs of hostiness and what a great use of sound! This just kept me listening right from the start. Good going!

You were busting with hostiness (which is much better than hosting with bustiness). Love the concept, good use of audio tangents!

Are you sure about that bustiness business? I tend to prefer hosting with mine.

Very enjoyable, and the sound effects added humor and ambiance to the piece without overwhelming it. But now you've got me parsing the electronics of that gun, darn it. My guess is that a photosensor was in the gun itself, responding to the image from the screen. Ahem, but I digress.

Anyway, that was a lot of fun, and I liked the way you set the scene, taking us back in time. Nice job!

I enjoyed this one a lot. Good production, good hostiness. I would've given it five stars if the host had found out how the gun mechanism worked.
