House by the Sea

Sex & the City. Hillary for President. Wife Swap. Men are from Mars. Divorce rates.

Gender wars reshape our cultural landscape daily, from columns by Anna Quindlen to rants from Howard Stern.

But instead, consider this wistful musing, a spoken fantasy that will never come to pass.

your house by the sea. You are a dreamer and an optimist, a creative force to be reckoned with - all traits that make you a person I'd want to befriend. I've enjoyed spending time with you here at the old public radio quest. Mostly it was me watching you, reading your posts and luxuriating in your kindness. If you ever get that house, let me know. I'd love to come visit.
Good luck,
Theresa

I could really imagine the dream. Your voice transported me there. The breathiness and smoothness made me lean in to hear more. My dream is by a lake---I'll be sure to invite you so YOU can have the same wonderful experience you have given me when I listened and imagined. Thanks for the journey.

Thanks for the great, great, awesome limericks! Thanks for you brilliant entry! Your voice has a wistful, but wise, youthful and intelligent and beautiful quality and delivery. Your story is very playful and fun and is a great starting point for discussing roles and sacrifice and relationships of all sorts. You definitely have lots of skill and experience! I love the music in the background, too!

And thanks for the wonderful comment on my post! Unfortunately, you may have given me a little more credit than I deserve. I'm not quite a psychology person. Thanks for the info on EMDR, that's really cool to know!

I want to be on this show. ...and I want my smart guy to be really hot! I hope they broadcast it during prime time in my hometown. I think they have cable now, but this is network material.

I think you may heard a different entry than the one I submitted - maybe the one that Gawker.com imagined my entry to be?

No hot guys (truly and deeply smart guys who operate from a world-changing level of intelligence probably don't strive to be 'hot' and I wouldn't disparage anyone with that term - we're human beings, not pieces of cooked meat!)

No reality show - it's a social experiment and a chance for personal growth and exploration.

No TV, no cable, no network, no broadcast. No product placement, no humiliation-as-entertainment, no producers using cheap editing techniques to craft 'good' and 'bad' archetypal figures. Just me and my House by the Sea gang - and maybe a book deal afterwards. (I'd have to think about whether everyone needs to sign a non-disclosure, though.)

I'd pick you Stephi IF you have kids... primarily because you've tossed your life up in the air and let the pieces fall where they may as you tried something new - and Second City is no small potatoes. (You've earned MY respect.)

I want to see the show! ...and yes, I am a mother. My sixteen-year-old would be a very sad boy if I dragged him away from his first love for a year. In fact, I'm pretty sure I'd be rendered childless, and therefor not qualify anymore. Oy!

This was great, I realized early on that men and women are at a disadvantage in the middle class, we have a long way to go to get to equality for the sexes, the real issue centers around the ability of the family to break through the glass ceiling seperating the Elite from the poor. Raising children isn't expensive providing food and housing along with getting to and from work add to the day to day grind that force people into the work force. Is it better that two should bring home the bacon sending our little ones off to be trained by people that don't have our same values? People that will complain our children aren't like the other children... Of course my children have higher standards to attain, that is how we taught them to behave. The problem is that when I finally made my way to a decent job that very job would result in other problems leading both my wife and I into a dual income situation paying a mortgage on one house and renting another. Talk about suddenly becomming house poor, we barely got by before. Can those genius men you seek be, Lawyers and Politicians? People that are derelict in their duties to protect our society from bullies and abuse? House work can be a chore, or it can be a labor of love depending on how you approach the subject, I need to create a system to house cats keeping them safe from outside predators and creating a better environment for us and them. I would like cats more if they were easier to maintain, how about a cat house by the sea?

Peace and Blessings,

Sincerely,

Gary

I felt like that, like what could I do if I wasn't a stay at home Mom, when I was prodcing my piece for this quest.
You are a voice to be reckoned with. You are to be admired and thanked. So, I give thanks for inspirational women like you who have a voice, a vision and a template to express and tell the truth.

You know that you CAN have a house by the sea. Think about house swapping or what I have done which is house sitting very rich people's homes.

Pick the sea, get a neighborhood and put up fliers in the local catering deli.

Then I will come visit you and we will giggle until 3am with stories of our lives.

In this world, in this country, we can make up the rules so that you can have your house by the sea...and not even have to mow the lawn.

Thanks for your very kind words RE: my 2 minutes.

I found it a pleasure to listen to your voice, even more than what you were saying. It was one of the few light, relaxed women's voices that I didn't have to strain to hear.

And I definitely enjoyed the fantasy!

I started truly envisioning this house by the sea - I could really see it. Except maybe for the part where 5 amazing and available men step up to take over the chores! :) (With apologies to those fine fellows who think it sounds like a great opportunity!)

I really liked your bio information too. I think you'd be great in the next round.

I'd love your feedback on my posting too!

It's the kind you wanna have a warm cup of cocoa to. I like the story too.

I'd say the only critique I have is to speak louder! I really wanna hear that voice! :)

Other than that, it was very, um, hosty.(?!)

Know why I was so quiet? I taped my entry at 3am in a houseful of light sleepers - and I didn't want to wake anyone up! If I get a next time, I promise to be louder...and do better.

Submitted by SophieDurka on May 14, 2007 - 3:07am.

One of the qualities of hostiness is a voice and attitude that makes you want to have dinner/coffee with that person.

Next time you drop in for a visit to the Pacific Northwest, you pick, I buy... or assemble food (hint-pick the former).
